English Ironstone China | Lovely Dinnerware

Vintage Ironstone Adds Charm to Your Table Setting
Much of this dinnerware was made in England, particularly in Staffordshire, going back to the 1840s. It provided a rising Middle Class with beautiful, durable and affordable china, in classic shapes. Ironstone china has retained its popularity among people who use and collect dinnerware.
Ironstone was also made in America and other places. The pieces shown in the collage are all vintage English ironstone, made by Alfred Meakin, J&G Meakin and Adams.
Ironstone dinnerware is finer than stoneware, but not as fine as porcelain. More modern ironstone is usually creamy white, sometimes with color transfer motifs. Older, antique wares are often a stark white, blue or grayish white.
You can create lovely traditional table settings, as well as cottage and romantic themes -- with some carefully chosen ironstone wares.

What to Look for in English Ironstone
Vintage or Antique
Vintage and antique dinnerware should be examined carefully for condition. Chips and cracks expose the ceramic substrate to air and water. These pieces can add to a display collection, but their value and usefulness is obviously not the same as perfect pieces.Chipped and cracked pieces should not be used for food if the food will come in contact with the damaged areas. Cracks can be challenging to see until the piece is wet.
Crazing is also a defect. This is when the glaze is cracked, but not the ceramic underneath. It is the result of thermal or physical shock. Crazing on the bottom is tolerable if the piece is being used, though it will likely spread over time.

Vintage Ironstone - Federalist White Pattern
A Popular Pattern - Was Sold by Sears
The Federalist White pattern was sold by Sears, made in Japan, and remains popular. This photo offers some reasons why.
The creamer and covered sugar in the foreground are in the Federalist pattern, made in the 1960s. The name indicates classic traditional lines, complementing Early American wares.
The background shows a spread from the January-February 2009 issue of Victoria magazine, about antique English ironstone. The similarities in shapes and style between the vintage and antique examples are clear.
We've seen the Federalist pattern in white, white with a blue floral transfer motif, and in yellow. The plain white is by far the most sought-after version.
