When doing a VA IRRRL, one of the required documents is the DD Form 214 -- or sometimes referred to as DD-214 or the Form DD214.

What is the veteran's DD-214?
The DD-214 is proof that a Veteran has served in the military and details information about service such as the dates of discharge, dates of service and current classification, retired or active, and National Guard or Reserve status. Generally speaking, the DD214 form is required in order to claim most of the military benefits -- including a VA loan. This is why the DD-214 form is so important when participating in the VA IRRRL program.

Veterans receive their original DD-214 when the separate from the military (retire) and most know that it is important not to lose. That said, some veterans misplace their DD-214 for one reason or another as they relocate or transition back to civilian life.

So it is important to realize that if you have misplaced your DD-214, all is not lost - you can request a free copy of your DD-214 by going to the National Archive official government site (archives.gov) through their eVetRecs system and filling out an online form.

You must be either the service member or the next of kin to request the DD-214 with this form. When requesting the DD214 form, you will need the following information:

* Social Security number
* Branch of service
* Dates of military service
* Place of discharge

When doing a VA IRRRL refinance, it is required that you have the DD214.

In addition to your Form DD-214, the IRRRL refinance program requires another important document - the Certificate of Eligibility. Although the VA waives many of the documentation requirements for the VA IRRRL program, these two documents are required.

The Certificate of Eligibility is also called the Form 26-1880 for VA loans. When you got your original VA loan on your property, you had to have a Form 26-1880 to prove your VA eligibility so when you go through the VA IRRRL refinance program, you have already had to use this form once when you got your original loan.

Because the VA streamline refinance loan is a "VA to VA" loan, meaning it can only be applied to a pre-existing VA loan, you have already used a Certificate of Eligibility for a VA loan on the property you are wanting to refinance.
