Is Diet Soda Addictive?
When I was living in Denver, there was a person at my work place that drank six cans of Diet Pepsi everyday. This person always on a diet, but never seemed to lose any weight. My drink of choice in those days was water. Years later, as the pounds started to pile on, I switched to Diet Coke. Everyday I needed to have at least one Diet Coke. This usually meant 12 to 64 ounces! Back then, there wasn't as much information out about diet sodas and their side effects.
Today, we know that almost anything can be addictive. It all depends on how you are interacting with the substance. It is clear that diet soda is not as addictive as nicotine or other drugs, but is there something about diet sodas that make them addictive? The obvious answer is that most diet sodas contain caffeine, yet there are those that down non-caffeinated varieties. CNN reported that "experts say the rituals that surround diet soda and the artificial sweeteners it contains can make some people psychologically -- and even physically -- dependent on it in ways that mimic more serious addictions."
Your Brain and Diet Soda
Certainly one of the factors of addiction is the caffeine. While diet soda does not contain as much caffeine as a cup of coffee (diet soda contains four to five times less caffeine than a 12 oz coffee), it can still be addictive. According to Dr. Harris Stratyner,"People do indeed become addicted to caffeine very rapidly, and they also withdraw from caffeine very rapidly. It can make their sleep patterns disturbed, it can make them restless, wired, anxious." If you have ever tried to quit the caffeine habit, you know that the result can be headaches, sluggish feelings and irritability. When I decided to kick the diet soda habit, all of these symptoms presented themselves. It took a good week for the symptoms to disappear, but then I started to feel better and even sleep better at night!
Substituting one substance for another is also a form of addiction. Just as drug users step down to a lesser drug, diet soda users are sometimes replacing other addictions with a diet soda addiction. Since a number of diet soda users are dieters, diet soda becomes a replacement for food. Others have used diet soda to replace, cigarette or alcohol additions. Thus, substituting one compulsive behavior for another.
The artificial sweeteners in diet soda may also trigger your brain to want more. Since these sweeteners are not real sugar, your brain does not quite receive the real sugar high. Your senses tell you that it tastes sweet, but your brain wants the real thing. You are much more likely to want more, because your brain is not satisfied.
Are You Addicted
What are the signs of addiction? According to the American Psychiatric Association, the major sign of addiction is then a person continues to use the substance even when they know it is harmful - causing physical or mental problems. If not having a diet soda during the day causes major stress in your life, maybe you are addicted.

What is Diet Soda?
Diet soda is usually a sugar-free, artificially sweetened, non-alcoholic carbonated beverage. Diet soda is generally marketed toward dieters and those that want to reduce their sugar intake. Some diet sodas contain caffeine.Artificial Sweeteners
Diet soda usually contains one of these artificial sweeteners:
What Else is in Diet Sodas?
The other ingredients in diet soda may include: Carbonated Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Phosphoric Acid, Natural Flavors, Artificial Sweetener, Potassium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Artificial Flavors and Colors.
Is There Any Nutritional Value?
Diet Soda has NO nutritional value. Made mostly of carbonated water and chemicals, it does not provide any healthy nutrients for your body.
Is Diet Soda a Waste of Money?
Because diet soda has no nutritional value, you are basically paying for something that gives your body zero benefit. If you spend $2.00 per day on soda, you are spending about $700 a year. If you spend $5 per day, you are throwing away $1,825 a year!
Are There Any Side Effects to Drinking Diet Soda?
There have been numerous studies about diet soda and the effects that it can have on your body. Are these effects dangerous? They could be over long time use of diet soda.Kidney Damage
In 2009, a study (Nurses' Health Study) was conducted of 3,256 women. Women who drank two or more servings of diet soda daily found a 30% drop in their kidney function. The kidney's are the bodies way of filtering out toxins from the body. Just drinking two cans or glasses of diet soda reduced kidney function. Even when other factors were taken into consideration (such as high blood pressure or diabetes), the results were the same. It is not clear why diet soda harms the kidneys. Hopefully more studies will find the answer.
Tooth Enamel Damage
Regular soda is known to be bad for tooth enamel because of the sugar and acid content. Diet soda does not contain sugar, but still may contain acid, such as phosphoric acid which erodes tooth enamel. Without strong tooth enamel, teeth are subject to higher rates of decay. Darker colas are more likely to contain phosphoric acid than are lighter sodas, however these sodas may contain citric acid, another acid that eats away at tooth enamel. Sipping diet soda with a straw can reduce the effects of acid on your teeth.
Bone Loss
Phosphoric acid, as we just discussed is found in some diet sodas, causes calcium to be excreted more quickly than normal. Calcium is then taken from your bones in order to keep the calcium levels in your bloodstream more constant. If you are worried about osteoporosis, your doctor may recommend that you quit the soda habit all together.
Weight Gain
Surprisingly, recent studies have linked diet soda consumption to an increase in obesity. Some researchers believe it is not the diet soda that is leading to obesity but the mindset. Drinking diet soda may make some people feel that they are now free to eat more because the are drinking a zero calorie drink. Other researches believe that the sweet taste without the high the brain is expecting from real sugar causes sugar cravings and increase in appetite to meet those cravings.
Why Should I Stop Drinking Diet Soda?
There are many reasons to stop drinking diet soda. Each individual needs to make the decision based on their own health goals. As I noted above, drinking diet soda can have negative effects on your health. Just because diet soda boasts zero calories, does not mean it is a healthy alternative to regular soda. Reasons to stop drinking diet soda include:Sugar Addiction
it has been suggested that the sweet taste of diet sodas just make the craving for real sugar more intense. Instead of turning down sweets, you may find yourself reaching for that piece of cake.
Caffeine Effects
Caffeine is a diuretic. You may be thinking that you are getting plenty of fluids when in fact you are losing fluids leading to dehydration which can cause headaches and a feeling of fatigue. Plus, caffeine has been linked to insomnia and anxiety disorders.
Aspartame Effects
Although aspartame is considered by the FDA to be safe, it has been linked to many side effects including dizziness, migraines, memory loss, diarrhea, mood swings and more. There is no current evidence that aspartame causes cancer or illness.
What Are the Alternatives to Diet Soda?
Even though water is the best alternative to diet soda, I know that I get tired of drinking plain water and want a little more flavor. Here are some good alternatives to diet soda:Water and Flavored Water
Many diet plans suggest that you drink 8 glasses of water a day. I often add a natural flavoring to plain water, such as True Lemon, True Lime or True Lime. There are commercial flavored waters available, but be careful, some contain artificial sweeteners. You can also try and add fruit to your water (letting it sit in the refrigerator for a few hours to enhance the flavor).
Green Tea
There has been numerous reports about the healthy effects of green tea including how it helps in weight loss. Green tea contains antioxidants and flavanols and may help manage high cholesterol and diabetes. Green tea comes in many different flavors and you can drink it hot or cold. You can find decaffeinated green tea, however, the levels of antioxidants and flavanols are decreased by the decaffeination process. Green tea does contain less caffeine than the average diet soda. While diet soda comes in at about 45mg per serving, green tea is only 15mg per serving.
Seltzer Water
Seltzer water is basically carbonated water. You can find plain seltzer water which you can add your own flavoring, or there are even flavored seltzer waters that contain zero calories.
The best idea is to find a healthy diet that you can stick to that includes healthy drink choices.
