Is Exercise Safe During Pregnancy
If any women were concerned about the safety of exercising whilst pregnant, the American College of Sports Medicine has decided to put their mind (but not their bodies!) at rest. They have released a statement that shows it has benefits for both mother and baby during and after pregnancy.
exercise may reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia
it can prevent (and treat) gestational diabetes, which is a common problem amongst many women
it can help with symptoms such as lower back pain
can assist with pregnancy related incontinence - which is no surprise
it helps with weight loss after birth (duh!)
it helps improve mood (love those endorphins)
it reduces stress - this is a common benefit of exercise amongst everyone, irrespective of whether they are pregnant or not
These benefits apply to women who have normal pregnancies. If there are problems, it is best to talk to your doctor to see whether exercise is safe in your case. If not, then check out these exercises for pregnant women for some ideas. Aqua aerobics is popular with pregnant women, due to the support the water gives them. It is done in a heated pool.
