Sociology - Is man an Animal?

Ranked #2,760 in Culture & Society, #62,215 overall

Man the Animal

It might not come as a surprise debate for many sociologists about the subject, 'Is man an animal'. For the general reader, Sociology might just mean - The study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. And for protagonists of Animalism - man maybe just another Animal.

Over and above the general social order, there also arises a more fundamental question - What is Man?. If in case, man is not an animal, Is man god?

On the other hand, with more and more rampant commercialization of all available assets; rising violence and instances of terror and terrorism / extremism; another question comes to fore - Is man the real animal?

Animal Talk - Animal Instincts

Even a person who never owned any pets or domesticated animals would know that animals can understand a good part of the human speech and clever enough to understand our body language. But sadly, the reverse is hardly true. Even a seasoned campaigner would fail in understanding say, the 'horse talk' or a 'dog bark'. The fact is that even if given many years, man would find it nigh impossible to understand animal talk.

Even wild animals are not known to attack humans for a kill, unless threatened. Man surprisingly, does not hesitate to kill another man (let alone animals), either out of fear or out of malice.

The deadliest of known animal venoms and poisons in this world (almost) all have antidotes. But then, if the sheer number of weapons that have been mass produced over the last few years (in the name of defense) were to be detonated all at once, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would be another asteroid belt between Venus and Mars. Not sure if you can call such a defense a case of Human Instinct or Animal Instinct.

Man and Animal

During or before any natural crisis, such as an earthquake or a tsunami, animals have an innate ability to be forewarned of the impending disaster. But for the animals which are tied to a pen or a pole, most of them manage to avert horrible consequences. Some animals are even adept at rescuing humans during times of disaster.

Contrarily, man is the only known species, which is capable of mass destruction of fellow homo-sapiens. Call it war, battle, rioting, looting, arson or terror strike, man has mastered the art of killing.

Just another Animal

Jolene_Belmain says:

I'm not saying that an animal cannot be an angel (because I most certainly think that they can be)... but we are all here to try to survive, just like all living creatures do. We are all created equal, but it depends on how we perceive ourselves.

ChrissLJ says:

Just another animal, and all animals are created equal.

crstnblue says:

Still wondering about! Maybe we're just a genetic error...

From a very narrow perspective - what man did good in real since its appearance on Earth surface? In our odd daily struggle to survive we managed to destroy almost every single thing we've touched...

And I would really like to know readers opinions regarding good/ positive things done by man all-in-all (or as "creature") along eons

BryanLSC says:

We are just another animal, no doubt about it. Homo sapiens is our name.

MaxReily says:

We are all part of the web of life.

goo2eyes says:

Man is Homo sapiens.

Vantorn says:

we are all in this thing called life on planet earth,we are all energy , the plants and animals , everything , we are here to learn a higher level of awareness , we are animals that have a higher level of consciousness

Human / God / Angel or Any Other

Tipi says:

I am a female human. I'm not God, but will be equal to angels once I'm free of this earth suit I live in now. .

grace says:

According to scientific classification in biology we are Homo Sapiens, undeniably just another kind of animal. Whatever! I see myself as God sees me. I am a soul living in a dust-built temple called the body.

billsolano says:

What makes us different from being just an animal is what makes us human. Be it good trait or bad traits...

TeamSTM says:

Man is indeed Human, Created in the Likeness of the Source, Great Spirit, God or Higher Being. We are set a part from the Animals that Creepth, Crawth and Slither! Man has Dominion over them, because we are created in the Image of our Creator, we there for must have Authority as well! :)

Not a god or an Angel, but indeed a Human-Being!! ;)

Or Better put, a Spirit having a Human Experience! Ponder that Statement, for it will make sense!

sponias says:

The human being is an animal, but he can become a superior creature because he has this potential.

phoenix-arizona-friends says:

We are after all made in his image.

Animals Make us Human

Editorial Review
Amazon.com Review

How can we give animals the best life--for them? What does an animal need to be happy In her groundbreaking, best-selling book Animals in Translation, Temple Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her experience as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act, and feel. Now she builds on those insights to show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life--on their terms, not ours.

Knowing what causes animals physical pain is usually easy, but pinpointing emotional distress is much harder. Drawing on the latest research and her own work, Grandin identifies the core emotional needs of animals and then explains how to fulfill the specific needs of dogs and cats, horses, farm animals, zoo animals, and even wildlife. Whether it's how to make the healthiest environment for the dog you must leave alone most of the day, how to keep pigs from being bored, or how to know if the lion pacing in the zoo is miserable or just exercising, Grandin teaches us to challenge our assumptions about animal contentment and honor our bond with our fellow creatures.

Animals Make Us Human is the culmination of almost thirty years of research, experimentation, and experience. This is essential reading for anyone who's ever owned, cared for, or simply cared about an animal.

This is an amazing lens on a topic that most of the population would never question, let along think about. When we are born, we are all created equal, and fight to survive as long as we can. We need to give respect to get respect. It's a circle that will never die.

It's rather simple I'd say Charles and so ironic - we (humans) just don't understand our true role on this planet and I'm not sure we ever did. Native American Indians and other cultures who truly understand the world around them try to teach us every now and then but we're just getting more and more dangerous for the creatures around us. The irony is that the ultimate danger will be for ourselves. Excellent lens, glad to be here!

Wow karmicchristian, what a though provoking topic; I love it!!! This might be a surprise to many, but there is no wrong answer to your debate! We are what we think we are and/or who we think we are connected to. In our own way and in our own time, we will begin to understand thing more clearer; this usually happens when we are ready to hear or realize them for ourselves! :)

Life isn't hard, its what we make it to be! It's all part of being created by a Creator, who gave us our Free Will to do as He did. That is to Create! :)

Another great lens with triggering topic! : )
No doubt man is an animal but, as long as we're born with the capability of thinking 2 more genes, a bigger brain and learn to play with fire... we should make the effort to be better compared with all the other animals, enlighten our mind and spirit, let the ego and vanity aside, make use of our instincts and extra senses for a challenging cause (on evolution scale), become friends with our inner self, bring a positive contribution to humankind, protect the environment and... be worth living on this Planet!

Your articles always hold such important messages. I wish that man could learn to be more compassionate to the other animals which share this planet. We often become too arrogant for the good of others. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and peace filled holiday season. The very best of seasonal blessings.
  • sponias Nov 23, 2011 @ 12:41 pm | delete
The topic you discuss in this lens is very interesting. I believe that the human being is a wild animal, but he can become a wise and perfect creature.
  • BryanLSC Sep 10, 2011 @ 11:42 am | delete
Hate humans who slaughter dolphins. I mean, they are creatures with a certain amount of intellect. They even help drowning humans to safety for crying out loud! Is that how we treat them back? Outrageous!
  • MaxReily Jul 27, 2011 @ 5:49 pm | delete

A beautiful and sad story. Man too often builds up on his own importance on this planet. Best wishes.
  • phoenix-arizona-friends Jun 14, 2011 @ 3:31 pm | delete
It is the animal in all of us that strives to evolve to something greater.
  • mismatch Jun 12, 2011 @ 12:59 pm | delete
man is an animal all right, but man is the only one to communicate through art -- I am an artist -- I have to accept the little I can get as the most I can have -- as a communication partner.
And men are something !! on top of the topic.

I have a shirt painted by a dolphin.
  • lollyj Jun 10, 2011 @ 12:02 pm | delete
Interesting topic for a lens. I'd have to say man is an animal in the broadest sense of the definition. The human animal's capability for greed, cruelty and destruction outstrips anything the "lower" animals can conceive.
  • marciag May 17, 2011 @ 10:23 am | delete
I have to say great lens and quite thought provoking indeed. Man is definitely an animal species, in all aspects of the word.
  • dannygator7790 May 16, 2011 @ 1:42 pm | delete
What an interesting and thought provoking lens! I must say that in essence man is animal. We just evolved to a different level.
  • Susan52 May 16, 2011 @ 11:06 am | delete
God created animals. God created man in His image and put him in dominion over the animals. Different. Man is not an animal even though some people act like animals having a bad day. It was a perfect world then; now, not so much.
  • BeyondRoses May 15, 2011 @ 1:05 pm | delete
As in all things, man may be of good or evil. While I want to believe that most of men are kind of heart, I know some are inhuman, and are less than animals ... It's my feeling in regard to cruelty to animals.
  • linhah May 14, 2011 @ 1:07 pm | delete
Due to all the destruction of nature, trees, animals, water, air, I'd have to say man is a terrorist.
