This page is dedicated to the ISEE test. The Independent School Entrance Examination is given to 5th through 11th graders who are applying to private and boarding schools. I am a full-time ISEE tutor in Boston and my company is called Prepped & Polished. I help students prepare for the the lower, middle, and upper level ISEE exams. ISEE Test Preparation
General Strategies for the ISEE Test
Leave nothing blank. There is no guessing penalty on the ISEE.
Maintain a steady pace while taking the test. Don't dwell on a problem too long. Instead, circle the problem and go back to it when you're at the end of the section.
Underline! Especially underline key words in reading passages, and key facts in math questions. This will prevent you from making careless errors.

Cracking the ISEE, 2011 by the Princeton Review
I use this book with my students because it has large print, it's easy to navigate, and it has efficient practice problems for all components of the ISEE test. I give this book about a B+, which is not a bad grade considering that other ISEE test prep books get C minuses or lower.

ISEE Essay Tips
Tips and Guidelines for the ISEE Essay
1. You get 30 minutes to write the essay.2. The essay will be the last section on the test.
3. You will write the essay in Black or Blue pen.
4. Write Legibly. Practice hand-writing essays in pen.
5. If you need to delete words, draw one neat line through them.
6. Indent your paragraphs substantially, so the reader can see that you've organized your essay.
7. Stay within the lines and margins.
8. Stick to the assigned topic.
9. Keep your sentences easy to understand. Break up long complicated sentences into two simpler sentences.
10. Try to use some big vocabulary words if you really know them.
11. Watch out for punctuation and grammar mistakes.
12. If you're not sure how to spell a word, use a synonym of that word that you know how to spell.
13. Write at least 1.5 pages. This will impress the reader.
14. Leave 1 or 2 minutes to read over your essay when you're done. Catch any careless errors, and neatly correct them.

Kaplan SSAT and ISEE 2012 Edition
ISEE test prep book
The Kaplan ISEE test prep book is a pretty good ISEE prep book. It has one ISEE practice test for each level and pretty good practice sets for synonyms, sentence completions, reading, and math.
The font is a bit small and it's definitely a dryer read than the Princeton Review Book.
Use this book only as a supplemental to your ISEE learning and preparation.

Mastering ISEE Synonyms
Tricks and Strategies for doing better on ISEE Synonym Questions

First, figure out the definition of the word before looking at the distracting answer choices. Dissect the word and figure out the roots of the word. If you're not sure about the roots of the word, then use a positive, negative, neutral strategy to find a matching charge of the word. Finally, go to the answer choices, and eliminate the three wrong choices.

Use the Peterson's guide to boost your vocabulary and do drills. The practice tests are harder than the actual ISEE test-so take the Peterson's practice tests with a grain of salt.
