Egyptians have a love/hate relationship with belly dancers. The sensual, provocative nature of belly dancing stands in direct contrast to the conservative culture in which it blooms. No wedding celebration is complete without a belly dancer, yet dancers are the scourge of Egyptian society. No parent dreams of their daughter growing up to become a famous belly dancer, for such a career brings shame to the family. Even when the daughter makes lots of money like Fifi Abdo.

Counted among the most famous of Egyptian belly dancers, Fifi Abdo's career has been filled with scandals. Deliberately pushing the envelope, Fifi wears a traditional male galabeya (white kaftan), smokes a hookah in public (women smoke hookah in Egypt, but only at home), and then turns the entire thing into a sensual dance in defiance of traditional gender roles and expected behavior.
