Is it the Right Time for Solar Powered Homes?

Well is it?
Is it the right time for Solar Powered Homes? A better question would be "Is it the right time for YOU!" It has to be a question that is on your mind or you would not be reading this Lens.
Have you looked at your hydro bill and thought, 'What can I do to reduce this'? If you are like me, you have replaced all of the old incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact florescent bulbs, checked appliances to make sure that they were 'Energy Star' rated and maybe even hunted down all the unnecessary Phantom Loads in your home.
I did these things and more but only saw a small reduction in my overall electric bill. To make things worse, my hydro electric company sent out a press release letting us know that its customers have been successful in the reduction of power consumption... a little too successful. So much so that they were losing money... so... they 'had to' increase their rates to compensate!
For me, that was the final straw... it was time to look into producing my own energy.

Do your Research!
I started looking into Solar Power (aka Solar Energy, Solar Electric). I knew this could be an expensive direction to take so I did my research. It is true that the current advances in solar cell technology have driven down the costs of residential solar power but if you are not careful, you could be paying too much for the solar powered home system that was to save you money. True there are a number of rebate and incentive programs provided by government agencies for residential solar power conversions but one still needs to know what they need and how much they are willing to spend.
A Little Do It Yourself (DIY) on Installation can SAVE!
A little DIY (Do It Yourself) on your new Solar Powered Home System can literally save you thousands of dollars thus giving you a quicker return on your investment. I have looked into doing this myself (even though I am not the handiest) and I found information written by Solar Power Professionals that can assist you in understanding how the solar powered home system works and how to do the installation. Some of these resources even instruct you how to do it "on the cheap" so you can get a quicker return on your investment. Return on Your DIY Investment
Oh, yes this investment will get you returns.First is the reduced requirement for the hydro company's power.
Second is any excess power you generate will be deducted from your hydro bill and if you generate more than you use, the hydro company will PAY YOU!
And the third return on the Solar Powered Home is... Increased Resale Home Value!
In Conclusion
So to answer the question 'Is it the right time for YOU?'Only you can answer the question but before you do, research. Look at your hydro bill, decide what it is you want to accomplish. Before contacting a contractor, do some up-front work and consider doing the work yourself. I would suggest reading information on Solar Powered Homes as this will you save yourself a lot of time and money.
