Shopping in Isla Mujeres

What shopping is like on the island of Isla Mujeres

There is tons of stuff to do when visiting Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is a quaint little island, and is relaxed and easy-going with matching residents.

Shopaholics will be right at home on Isla Mujeres. Many stores open in late morning and close around 10 pm. There are literally hundreds of shops lining every street, and vendors transversing the island so you will never run out of opportunities to buy things. Vendors sell things from wide varieties of t-shirts to fresh food and Mayan creations such as the popular Mayan Calendar.

Quite often the items for sale are expensive, but the good thing is that you can haggle with most shopkeepers. For example, I wanted to buy a silver bracelet for someone. The vendor was originally asking $38, but in the end I brought him down to $20. Not too bad for a .925 silver bracelet.

Spanish Phrasebooks

Spanish phrasebooks for the trip to Isla Mujeres

Even though practically everyone on the island speaks English, it still would be useful to take along a Spanish phrasebook and/or dictionary. You never know, and I always like to be prepared. Besides, doesn't speaking the language add to the experience?

T-shirt Mania!

T-shirts galore in Isla Mujeres

Just about everywhere you turn in Isla Mujeres there's a t-shirt shop. And that would make sense, because everybody loves t-shirts, right?

A lot of these places sell t-shirts "10 for $10," and for other incredibly cheap prices. However, most of these t-shirts are paper-thin and are exactly worth the price paid. If you don't mind a shirt like that, then be my guest to buy from these shops. But, I'm the kind of guy that likes to pay for something that'll last longer than one time in the washing machine.

Fear not, there actually are good t-shirt shops in Isla Mujeres. One of these is The T-Shirt Corner. Although they do have the 10 for $10 deal for the less-than-good quality shirts, they also do have a wide variety of quality apparel. This is where I got most of my shirts while in Isla Mujeres. You can even save 10% with the below coupon!

T-Shirt Corner is located right on Hidalgo Street.

Beaching in Isla Mujeres

What the beaches are like

There is plenty of beach on Isla Mujeres, and the beaches are soft and well...sandy. You can plop down on your favorite beach towel or rent one of the many beach chairs for $5/day. An assistant will come visit you when you take a seat and collect the fee and usually ask you for something to drink. Drinks are awesome down there, and although I don't drink alcohol, they make the absolute best limeade (or as it is said in Spanish, limonada)!

One of the more popular beaches on the island is Playa del Norte, or North Beach. Here you will find people from all over the world, just chilling and soaking up some sun.

Note that beaches there are mostly top-optional, so be warned. Don't gawk either, these people are just people from different areas of the world of different cultures and are just here to relax and get some sun, just like you are. :)

Snorkeling

Snorkeling in Isla Mujeres

My favorite activity. The water on the side facing Cancún is calm and clear, and perfect for snorkeling. You can take a charter out to one of the bigger reefs, but I had a good time just exploring around the island. There are a lot of neat little places to snorkel, and a lot to see including stingrays, crabs, barracuda (one swam up to my face!), and huge masses of other tropical fish. Some relatives of mine also saw turtles.

There were some nice spots just next to my hotel. I just had to walk maybe a block to find a cool little cove with clear water and lots of fish. One of these spots is in the cove just next to the Avalon resort. This areas is full of rocks and reef, is calm and clear, and heavily populated with all kinds of creatures. One spot was just so densely populated with fish that I couldn't see the other side. There are also several other spots that are excellent, just do a little exploring and you'll find them.

By the way, that's me in the photo.

A Stingray!

Dining in Isla Mujeres

Places to eat on Isla Mujeres

There are a lot of very nice places to dine on Isla Mujeres; I never had a problem finding a nice place to eat. Walking downtown there are restaurants on each side, ranging from seafood to fine Italian cuisine to Mexican Caribbean and much more.

One of my most favorite places to eat, however, was the Bistro Francias, or French Bistro. They have absolutely the BEST French toast ever. I don't think I've had such a good breakfast in a long time. Hot French toast smothered in real maple syrup, served with fresh fruit and freshly-squeezed orange juice. Mmm...

isla mujeres french bistro restaurant

Also, if anyone's wondering, I didn't get sick from the food, nor did anyone I went with (around 40 people for a wedding). I'd consider anything from a restaurant on the island to be safe to eat. Besides, quite often sickness on vacation results from drinking. A lot of alcohol + sun + no water = dehydration! Dehydration is a nasty thing and will spoil a perfect vacation getaway.

There are lots of these in the water around Isla Mujeres

More Stuff to Do

Other Stuff to Do in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is chock full of stuff to do. I was there for an entire week and never ran out of things to do. I and some family members rented a gas-powered golf cart (around $40 per day) and we explored the island. From a turtle farm to an old pirate house to a lighthouse lookout, there's plenty to see.

Traveling from the north end of the island to the southernmost point takes about 20 minutes at the racing speed of a golf cart. At the southern end there is a Mayan ruin, lighthouse, and a few neat little shops. Standing on the top of the lighthouse , I could see pretty far and the view of the ocean was breathtaking.

Or, if you do want to explore the outside world, just hop on the high-speed ferry and go over to Cancún for even more to do. One day I went to Chichen Itza, one of the most (if not the most) complete Mayan archaeological sites in the world.

Tips For a Great Vacation

Tips for having a good time on Isla Mujeres

  • Educate yourself before you go to the island!
  • Don't drink the water. Use bottled water (it's cheap, about $.70/bottle) for drinking and brushing teeth with.
  • Wear sunscreen, nothing ruins a fun time more than a back on fire.
  • Be careful. There aren't really any dangerous spots on the island--I went out walking at 10 pm and later all the time, but as with anything else, use common sense.
  • Don't flush toilet paper down the toilet. The sewer system on the island isn't equipped to handle toilet paper and other things flushed. Instead, put it in the garbage can next to the toilet.
  • When in the ocean, be careful. The ocean is beautiful, but it can be dangerous. Just use common sense.
  • Explore the island! There's a lot to see on this 5 mile long slice of paradise.
  • Drink lots of water. As I said, dehydration is not a fun thing and a trip to "la clínica" would not be memorable.
  • Don't drive recklessly, if you drive at all. Traffic violations in Mexico are very severe and will get you in a lot of trouble. Don't be an idiot on the road.
  • Have a good time!
