If you love Kauai, go to Maui!
Kauai, aptly nicknamed the Garden Isle, is the Hawaiian vacation destination treasured for its lush tropical greenery and sparkling sand beaches. This little island in the sun is the perfect place to recharge and enjoy.
We just returned from this little island jewel. It was even better the second time around. I was lucky enough to spend 10 days on this little jewel, alone, four years ago, in a 100 year old beach cabin. We ended up staying there again and it was just as beautiful as the first time.
Believe it or not...I even got into a helicopter and toured the entire island of Kauai. Never thought that would happen. Amazing!
Kauai's history is one of folklore steeped in rich heritage. It is said that a volcano erupted deep in the heart of the Pacific Ocean to create these Hawaiian islands of serenity and beauty.
Kauai is almost a perfect circle, with magnificent beauty emanating from each one of its 553 square miles. The strategic island location keeps the Pacific Ocean waters and temperature perfect year-round.
Kauai's beaches make up almost half of it shoreline, which is an amazing perk for visitors. You can almost make a nonstop drive around the island of Kauai, if you're not distracted by the beauty and hidden treasures of this little slice of paradise.
Watch out for the Menehune! A mythical race of small people who are said to have created incredible structures, fishponds and aqueducts, often in a single night. The locals believe that the Menehune lived in the woods and were shunned by Hawaiians. This cherished legend still lives on today and the Menehune are blamed when things go wrong. Watch where you put your keys!
As the local's on this tropical paradise love to say, "if you love Kauai, go to Maui."

Chickens and Roosters. Oh My!
Don't Feed The Wildlife.

It doesn't take long to notice that this island is a safe haven for roaming chickens and roosters who don't know how to keep their mouths shut. Crowing morning, noon and night. They have become adept at begging due to human contact and our need to feed the animals:)
Since Kauai is the only Hawaiian Island without a mongoose population, these feathered friends have established themselves here, free to roam in the absence of a natural predator.
Kauai's wild fowl may be the last species in the world that is allowed to exist in a state of utter freedom. Don't feed them. They're already comfortable enough!
Plants and Animals on Kauai, Hawaii
Home to Some of the Rarest Species on Earth
The Garden Isle offers a cornucopia of flora and fauna. Where else would you have the opportunity to see a variety of unique and distinctive animals and birds on a tropical island.Kauai's perfect weather provides just the right amount of sun and rain to nurture kiawe trees, blackberries, java plum, guava, eucalyptus, bamboo, sandalwood, pineapple, and sugarcane, among others. One of Kauai's specialties is the indigenous mokihana vine and berry, found only on the island. Other great finds include orchids, coconut palms, plumeria, hibiscus and other tropical plants throughout the island, with its arid to lush climate enhancing the beauty and fragrance of Kauai's flowers and vegetation.
The Nene Goose is the state bird of Kauai but keep your eyes peeled for doves, cardinals, egrets, and an occasional rooster along the way.
Marine life on Kauai is amazing -- dolphins, monk seals, sea turtles, reef fish, coral reefs, whales, and so much more.
