Is This FREE?

One of my pet peeves at the moment is all the stuff that is offered FREE whether it is on the Internet or not. Filtering through all this stuff to find out what is really free and what isn't can be a nightmare.

Buy One get One FREE! - This is a really good one, how can one of them be free if you have to lay out cash to get it?

Sign up and get 1000 free website visits for FREE - This is an offer that loads of the Traffic Exchanges give. Sounds good don't it? So you sign up and there is no free credit like it promised you, so off you go to read the FAQ. Upon finding the answer you discover that you have to surf so many websites before you can get your free hits. Hmmm, working for free stuff, who are they kidding?

FREE to me means that there is no hidden charges, no having to work for it and definitely not having to purchase something to get them.

Of course there is plenty of stuff that is free as offering free stuff is such a great marketting ploy. Give someone something for free and most of the time you will get something back, but giving something and expecting something back in return makes it no longer free.

To help prove my point below is two definitions of the word FREE

  1. provided without, or not subject to, a charge or payment
  2. given without consideration of a return or reward

Is This FREE?

Now it's time for your say.

When you are offered something FREE are you wary to take it, do you try looking for the hidden charges or do you just accept it as said?

Free Loader says:

There is SOME things that are free, like Auctiva (an eBay tool) which makes money out of eBay and not out of the user.

av_dude says:

You just need to understand that there is a difference between Free . . . and . . . Free. (Did I Just Say That?)
Sometimes it IS Free in hopes that you will buy from them in the future.
This is the Best Kind Of Free there is.
The other kind(s) aren't really free though, are they?

FREE costs way too much!

Duyen says:

Promotion (promos) samples are free, however, most of the so-to-say "free" items on the internet, that are usually extreme (for example, a free Mac or ipod), are merely lures to entice you to fill out several surveys that you wouldn't have filled out in the beginning. Just be careful.

Amanda_Blue says:

I agree with you that it is VERY annoying to be offered something FREE which is not...I have come to always look for the hidden charges.

Grasshoppa says:

I ALWAYS use the "follow the money" rule, and I find that most free stuff... isn't. Businesses don't give stuff away without expecting something in return. Interestingly, I'm currently waiting a requisite 90 day period to see if I'm really going to get something for free that I was promised. If it really happens, that will be... hmm, one in a row?

Look for really small print.

bdkz says:

Nothing is free!

fefe says:

av_dude - I understand the difference but it's still not free because they want something from you. You might just end up on their mailing list.

Ignoti says:

I assume the worst.

Chadrew says:

There's almost always some sort of catch. Doesn't mean that it isn't a good offer though.

fefe says:

Whenever I see "FREE OFFER" I know there's a catch. Most of the time it's not worth it!

Free Software

A example of 'FREE' on Wikipedia

Category: File - :DebianLenny.png|thumb|300px|Systems like Debian are composed of free software

Free software or software libre is software that can be used, studied, and modified without restriction, and which can be copied and redistributed in modified or unmodified form either without restriction, or with minimal restrictions only to ensure that further recipients can also do these things and that manufacturers of consumer-facing hardware allow user modifications to their hardware. Free software is available gratis (free of charge) in most cases.

In practice, for software to be distributed as free software, the human-readable form of the program (the source code) must be made available to the recipient along with a notice granting the above permissions. Such a notice either is a "free software license", or a notice that the source code is released into the public domain.

The free software movement was conceived in 1983 by Richard Stallman to satisfy the need for and to give the benefi...
