As an extension to my doctoral dissertation on the relationship between IT flexibility and IT Effectiveness, it occurred to me that one of the reasons why IT outsourcing appears to be having difficulty experiencing sustained success is that while outsourcing increases flexibility associated with the people dimension of IT management (with corresponding cost reductions), in reality, the process dimension experiences decreased flexibility, in that, the outsourcer is now at the mercy of the outsourced vendor, who leverages standardized processes, systems, etc. to achieve optimal cost efficiencies and reduced operating margins. It is because of this increased rigidity (decreased flexibility) in the process dimension, that business leaders become disenfranchised as to the benefits associated with outsourcing, based on the people dimension alone.
