Italian Folk Remedies

Italian folk medicine has existed for thousands of years. Italians still use techniques and remedies that were created by the ancient Romans. Most Italian folk remedies involve the use of olive oil and other natural resources available for the treatment of skin rash, sore aches and muscles and constipation.

ACHES AND PAINS

For aches and pains associated with sore or pulled muscles, try the Italian remedy of combining 4 tablespoons olive oil and fresh rosemary (which is steeped in a kettle and then mixed with olive oil). After the mixture cools until it is slightly warm, rub it on the affected area. Mint leaves work well for this purpose and can be combined with the rosemary. Leave on the skin for 20 minutes and then rinse. Repeat as necessary.

SKIN BURNS & INFECTIONS

Mix 3 tablespoons olive oil with six drops of lavender oil and gently apply to affected area. Lavender has natural soothing qualities that relax the body. Lavender also contains antifungal agents that can be used in treatment of vaginal yeast infections as well. To treat a yeast infection with lavender, apply 8-12 drops of oil in a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. Use twice daily until the infection has cleared.

CONSTIPATION

Italians have long treated constipation with a combination of lemon juice and olive oil. To treat constipation, mix 1 teaspoon of olive oil with 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice and drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

DRY SKIN AND HAIR

Olive oil alone is used on hair to moisturize and condition, leaving hair as soft as silk. Olive oil mixed with sand works well as an exfoliate for the skin, and has been used for thousands of years. To exfoliate, mix equal parts sand and oil, rub skin vigorously with the mixture and rinse.
