What is it about Italy that just oozes charm, sophistication and style.

If you have ever visited Italy you will know exactly what I am talking about. The Italian people in general certainly know how to dress and style themselves and they generally seem to take great care of their appearance.

I'm also a great lover of Italian food and the lifestyle as the Italian people seem to be very family orientated and enjoy spending a great deal of time with their families especially at meal times.

Another thing I love about Italy apart from the wonderful sights is the shopping. I could spend an absolute fortune in the Italian shops if my budget permitted me.

Whilst were on the topic of shopping I thought I would pass on some of my favourite products that I have collected over the years that take pride of place in my home.

Venetian Masks

Venetian MasksVenetian Masks have been worn in Italy since the 12th century. They were originally worn to protect the wearer's identity during promiscuous or decadent activities. All sorts of people wore them to free themselves from judging neighbours from the gentry class to the peasants and even members of the clergy.

They have been made for many centuries in Venice out of papier-mache and then decorated with fur, fabric, ribbons and gems. Over time Venetian Masks have been the symbol of Carnevale a widely celebrated street fair that celebrates hedonism. Venetian Masks are also now widely worn at masquerade balls, mardi gras, ball and other events.

Capodimonte Porcelain

Capodimonte PorcelainThe production of Capodimonte Porcelain figurines and floral displays originated in Naples way back in the early eighteenth century. It was in fact the King of Naples Charles of Bourbon who later became the King of Spain who created the production of Capodimonte Porcelain.

It took many years to manufacture a suitable substance for porcelain that was equal quality to Chinese porcelain. The full production began when he organised his artistic workforce in the Royal factory of Capodimonte. When he moved to Spain the factory was destroyed so that no trace was left to the origin of his discoveries, however he transported all moulds, models and artists with him to Spain and formed the porcelain factory Buen Retiro near Madrid.

Murano Glass Jewellery

Murrina Glass JewelleryMurano Glass Jewellery is renowned for being bright and beautiful with intricate designs. The techniques for the various designs have been handed down from the Venetian glassmakers from years before. Some of the techniques include adding compounds to the molten glass which produces a particular colour; other glass pieces involve combining layers of glass.

Murano Glass originates from the island of Murano, located of the coast of Venice. Murano Glass has been made in Italy since 1291 which is when the Venetian glass makers embarked on the island.

During the 1950's and 1960's Murano glass was extremely popular and was exported all over the world. Tourists to the area would buy large quantities to take home, the most popular Murano glass gifts were Murano beads and Murano Jewellery.

Tedora Jewellery

Tedora Jewellery originates from Italy but because of its popularity you can now find it all over the world. Tedora Jewellery has become a very popular piece of fashion jewellery due to its design, individuality and precious metal.

Tedora Charms are very popular pieces of Tedora Jewellery that are worn on both bracelets and necklaces. They are beautiful pieces that make an idea gift for a loved one. Tedora bracelets are similar to Pandora bracelets in the respect that you can initially buy a Tedora bracelet and then build up a beautiful collection of Tedora Charms over a period of time, again making the idea gift.
Tedora Charm are often inspired by mythology, they are made from a range of materials which include glass, enamel, onyx, bronze, silver, gold and occasionally pearls.

Tedora Charm Bracelets are very striking and come in a mixture of colours and materials. Once you have a nice collection of Tedora Charms for your bracelets you can mix them around to show variation and originality.

Masquerade Masks

Masquerade MasksMasquerade Masks that are worn at Masquerade Balls originated in medieval court life where they were originally designed to celebrate a marriage or mark a point in royal dynasty.
The Masks presented complete anonymity and in an era where the class was governed by strict etiquette and rules of behaviour the masks provided behaviour that was irresistible.
Masquerade ballsdeveloped into semi public events by the time of the Renaissance, this enabled many classes to interact under the mask of disguise such as nobleman and servants.

During the 17th Century Masquerade Masks were extremely popular throughout Europe and reached London by the early 18th century. They remained popular throughout the 18th century and spread over to Colonial America.

Today they are still a popular choice with many event organisers for corporate and charity events and numerous private parties around the world. There are also many Masquerade weddings and university graduation balls as well as 18th, 21st parties.
