Italian Weddings and Their Tradition

Those couples who have Italian parentage or even those couples who have distant relatives that originated from Italy and have never been to Italy can still follow some Italian Wedding traditions. Blending some of those traditions to your wedding can also be fun since you are also giving honor to your ancestors. Italians religious aspects, love for dancing and food, and bridal jewelry may all be to your wedding's advantage.

Roman Catholicism is the main religion in Italy therefore it is just normal, if you are also a Catholic, to include a full Mass with the ceremony. If you and your future spouse are not Catholics you can still have a traditional Italian reception. After the Mass though, you and your spouse may release a pair of white doves to symbolize your love and affection for each other.

Preparing for an Italian wedding:

Check if I can have a full Mass for my ceremony
Prepare the food
Find great tasty wine
Prepare myself to dance more
(hope I won't get drunk.)

Italian Wedding Dances

The reception that follows the ceremony is where the traditions of Italian weddings take place. First, all the guests will need to assemble in the reception area and they will be served drinks before the couple arrives. When the couple arrives, the guests will offer a toast to them as a sign of tradition.

Dances are also included in a traditional Italian wedding. a good example of their wedding dances is the Tarantella. There are a lot of different stories regarding the origin of this dance, but the most stories involving this dance is around a spider bite and counteracting the venom of the spider bite. Nowadays, la tarantella is danced in a group, wherein the group will form a circle dance and the participants will dance in a clockwise direction until the music speeds up and then they will reverse direction. Once the tempo speeds up the group will change direction again. This will continue until it is impossible to keep up with the tempo of the music.

While dances are in every wedding, Italian wedding dances are a bit different since they have more of that tradition and meaning to each dances they make.

Italian Food

Of course a great Italian traditional wedding will not be authentic without a great wedding feast. An Italian wedding will begin with an antipasto course that has olives, pickled sweet peppers, mushrooms and cheeses. This will naturally be followed by many other different courses that include pastas, soups, meats, salads and desserts that are completed by savory wines.

“An Italian Wedding will not be complete without their great tasty Italian food.”

Ending an Italian Wedding

At the end of the wedding reception, the couple can break a glass or vase that is also similar to the Jewish tradition where the groom breaks a wine glass at the conclusion of the ceremony. Although the Jewish couple breaks a glass as a symbol of the hardship their ancestors endured because of their faith. For Italian couples, the meaning of the glass breaking means the number of happy years that the couple will enjoy together.

These are only a few of those Italian wedding tradition those couples of Italian decent can think of incorporating their wedding. However, those couples who are of different nationalities can still incorporate an Italian themed wedding just for the sake of enjoying new culture and new customs. After the wedding, the couple can even go to Italy for a great honeymoon.
