Discover Italy

Italy is one of Europe's most popular destinations, luring travelers with it's culinary delights, architecture, art, countryside, mountains, breathtaking coastlines and "la dolce vita" (the sweet life). The Most Serene Republic of San Marino and the State of the Vatican City are also located within its borders, with Vatican City being located within the city of Rome, Italy's capital city.

I've always been fascinated by Italy and the Italian language. My passion for studying and learning Italian, Italian songs, music and travel all came into play when opportunities to travel to Europe presented themselves; although I've traveled to a number of European countries, I've traveled to Italy the most often and very much enjoy sharing my travel experiences and photographs.

Most of the photographs in my lenses featuring travel destinations in Italy are personal photographs that were taken over the span of three trips to Italy. I much prefer independent travel - my husband and I have never been on an organized tour simply because we prefer planning our own itinerary and having control over various aspects of our budget.

Allora, cominciamo! Questo bel paese ti sta aspettando. (So, let's get started! This beautiful country is waiting for you.)

Italy - On the Map

Map of Italy - Italy on the Italian Peninsula

italy mapItaly is located in Southern Europe and is also considered to be a Western European nation. Most of Italy is located on the Apennine Peninsula, sometimes referred to as the Italian Peninsula - a boot-shaped peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, with the island of Sicily located just off its toe and the island of Sardinia located just south of Corsica. Both Sicily and Sardinia are part of Italy.

Northern Italy is bordered from west to east by France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, while the three remaining sides are surrounded by water, namely the Adriatic, Ionian, Tyrrhenian and Ligurian Seas. The Alps are to the north, with Mont Blanc in the northwest being the highest peak, and the Apennine Mountains extend from northern to southern Italy.

Each of Italy's regions has much to offer, and although Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples are on most travellers' must-see lists, don't overlook the tranquility of Assisi in Umbria or the towns along the rugged, scenic coastlines of Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast.

Independent Travel - Planning Your Trip

Don't try to see too much - but don't overlook the top items on your must-see list either. Create a realistic itinerary and if at all possible, include both large cities and small towns/rural areas. Allow for some flexibility and consult with travel companions before finalizing the itinerary.

Hello Everyone!

A Little About Me

Although I have traveled to a number of European countries, Italy is one of my favorites. It is also the European country that I've traveled to the most often and one of the countries I'd love to go back to. My articles on Squidoo also include various musical genres (including music for Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving), travel gifts, European geography, Indo-European languages, Halloween costumes, fashion, jewelry, decor, spirituality, food, gift baskets, and gourmet items.
