Problems that involve an itchy scalp and hair loss can be things like Folliculitis, Ringworm (tinea capitis), Psoriasis, and Sebhorreic Dermatitis.

Folliculitis- an infection due to damaged hair follicles, often caused by harsh chemicals found in many shampoos and hair products. The symptoms are usually small white-headed pimples around the hair follicles, or, in more advanced cases of deep folliculitis, large painful red boils.

If treated early, folliculitis can be cleared up and any hair loss will normally grow back. If left untreated however, then it can damage the hair follicle and result in scarring and bald patches with no visible signs of hair follicles - a condition known as cicatricial alopecia.


Ringworm Of The Scalp (Tinea Capitis) - caused by mould-like fungi called dermatophytes, this superficial fungal infection of the scalp is highly contagious and aggressive and is normally treated using strong medications containing miconazole, clotrimazole or similar ingredients, and requires close monitoring.

The symptoms include red, itchy patches on the scalp, and hair loss. The area on the skin may peel or scale and become inflamed, red and itchy, with swollen blisters or a rash that appears as black dots. If left untreated it can, like folliculitis, lead to cicatricial alopecia.


Psoriasis - a fairly common non-contagious skin disease (an estimated 7-8 million sufferers in the US alone) in which skin cells replace themselves too quickly and cause red lesions with scale to appear.

Scalp psoriasis affects around half of all psoriasis sufferers, and the tell-tale symptoms are white scales on patches of very red skin, with severe itching and sometimes temporary baldness on the affected areas.


Seborrheic Dermatitis - similar in appearance to eczema (Atopic Dermatitis), it is a non-contagious skin disease due to excessive oiliness of the skin. Yeasts such as Malassezia which feed on the natural oils on the scalp, proliferate in these conditions and the toxic chemicals they produce cause the skin to become irritated and begin flaking. The disease commonly occurs in infants, middle-aged people, and the elderly, and is commonly known in infants as cradle cap.

Strong chemicals and harsh hair products can cause excessive drying of the scalp, at which point your body says "oh hey, the skin over there is drying out...I need to produce more oil and moisturize it", which causes the over-production of sebum and makes the condition worse.

Avoiding the use of harsh shampoos can minimise the itchy scalp problem, as well as using natural /essential oils such as Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil and Lavender Oil. Rosemary and Lavender are great at stimulating hair growth as are Birch, Jojoba, Thyme, Bay, Grapeseed and Cedarwood.

Carrier Oils are needed as the essential oils themselves can be too strong to use on their own. They also allow for lubrication which helps when massaging the remedy in, and they allow the essential oil to travel freely across the skin and distribute itself over a larger area. Some excellent carrier oils are:

- Coconut Oil
- Almond Oil
- Soybean Oil
- Sesame Oil
- Avocado Oil

Essential Oils For Stimulating Scalp

• Take 4 oz of a warm carrier oil like Almond or Soybean.
  
• Add 6 drops of Bay and Lavender essential oils
  
• Mix thoroughly
  
• Apply to scalp and massage in
  
• Leave to absord for about 20 minutes
  

Hair Growth Essential Oil Blend

• Add 2 drops of Thyme and Cedarwood, and 3 drops of Lavender and Rosemary essential oils into a small jar.
  
• Now blend in a half teaspoon of jojoba oil and 4 teaspoons of grapeseed oil.
  
• Mix it all throughly.
  
• Massage this mix into your scalp for 2 minutes every night, and wrapping your head in a warm towel after treatment.
  

Tip: Make sure you cover your pillow with an old towel in case of any contact with the oils.

Another effective natural cure for hair loss is the application of coconut milk all over the scalp. By massaging it into the areas affected by hair loss, it will nourish the hair and promote hair growth.

The coconut milk is prepared by grinding coconut shavings and squeezing them well.

Hair loss due to stress is fairly common these days, as modern life takes it's toll.

There are 2 main types of hair loss due to stress:

1. The more common type of hair loss is called "telogen effluvium". This type of hair loss prevents the hair from growing and the hair growing process can remain dormant for anywhere between 3-6 months. After which, there is a high possibility that the hair will begin to grow back once the single event stress is over, usually within a period of 6-9 months.

2. A second and more serious hair loss due to stress is known as "alopecia areata". It actually involves the white blood cell attacking the hair follicles, resulting in large quantities of hair falling out. This could start with a small patch anywhere on your head (it does not necessary starts from the forehead) and ultimately spreads to the entire scalp. It can be caused by conditions like folliculitis as mentioned above.
