Sore, Burning Red Itchy Scalp? Dry, Painful Flaky Scalp and Dandruff? Or Does Your Scalp Just Feel Tight And Not Quite Right?

Whatever your case may be, an itchy scalp can be a frustrating and painful experience.

Fortunately, there are many itchy scalp remedies that you can make quickly and cheaply in the comfort of your own home without having to resort to strong, synthetic drugs.

However, all medical problems are different depending on your situation, and I would highly recommend you speak to your doctor and/or dermatologist to get more information on your current condition, especially if you are pregnant - you MUST consult with your doctor before starting any treatment.

Maybe you're sick and tired of all the junk these big companies are putting in their products, just so they can increase their bottom line at the expense of your health? Maybe you want to get back to basics and understand how natural home remedies can be a real alternative to the relentless modern pursuit of more and more complex and harmful products? Or perhaps you just want to take a stand against all the damage that is being done to our environment and wildlife in the name of "scientific progress"?

Whatever your reasons, learning more about how to use and benefit from natural home itchy scalp remedies, can be a real step in improving your health, and the health of those around you.

If you like what you see on this itchy scalp remedy lens or if I can help you out in any way, why not leave me a message in the Guestbook at the very bottom of the page...I'd love to hear from you! :)

Anyway, that's the boring stuff out of the way, so now let's get down to business!

What Was The Cause Of My Itchy Scalp?

Find Out Why You've Got An Itchy Scalp...

In most cases an itchy scalp can be narrowed down to one of the following causes:

  • Dandruff
  • Sunburn
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis - similar to dandruff.
  • Head lice
  • Poor hair care
  • Reaction to hair products
  • Hair dye allergy
  • Reaction to perm chemicals
  • Stress
  • Skin condition such as Acne
  • Viral infections like Chicken Pox and Shingles
  • A cyst, such as an epidermal or sebaceous cyst
  • A fungus like Ringworm (tinea capitis).
  • This is a superficial fungal infection of the scalp and is caused by mould-like fungi called dermatophytes.

Yeast funguses like Malassezia Globbosa or Pitysporum Ovale which thrive on skin which has been stripped of its natural oils, cause the skin to begin flaking and produce what we all know as dandruff.

These organisms are normally always present on the skin in small numbers, however problems occur when their numbers increase significantly.

What The Big Companies Don't Want You To Know About Your Itchy Scalp!

Cheap Chemicals To Boost Profits...At Our Expense! GRRRR!!

You may be surprised to learn that many of the leading brand shampoos and conditioners today often contain harsh chemicals that can cause the scalp to dry out and leave the follicles open to infection (folliculitis).

An example of one of these toxic chemicals is Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) which is an aggressive cleaning and foaming agent commonly used as an engine degreaser. Although proven to strip oils from and prematurely age your skin, damage eye membranes, retard healing, inhibit hair follicle growth and more, it is added to 90% of shampoos on the market. It can also be found in most brands of toothpaste.

For a list of more products that contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, check the US Department of Health's Household Products Database

Silicone is another harmful chemical used as an artificial shine enhancer in many leading brand conditioners.

Diethanolamine (DEA), which is used as an emulsifier and foaming agent in shampoos is a suspect cancer-causing agent. The federal National Toxicology Program (NTP) completed a study in 1998 that found an association between the topical application of diethanolamine and certain DEA-related ingredients and cancer in laboratory animals. Although this study did not establish a link between DEA and the risk of cancer in humans, it is certainly a possibility when considering the damage it can do to a laboratory animal.

At the end of the day, a chemical that is so toxic for an animal is something that we should not be putting on our bodies. Unfortunately, the large pharmaceutical companies, corporations, and government have not had our best interests at heart, rather they've been thinking more about how to increase their profit margins even further.

Some Other Nasties From The World Of Big-Name Shampoos...

Next time you're at the store, take a look at the labels of the major shampoos and see if you can see any of the following...

Methylisothiazoline (also known as MIT) - this ingredient which is commonly found in many major shampoo brands, has been found to cause damage to the nervous system. When tested on the brain cells of lab rats, neurological damage occurred when the chemical came into contact with the cells. It basically slows the networking of neurons which are essential for proper function of our brain and nervous system.

Formaldehyde - inexpensive preservative and disinfectant; also a suspected cancer-causing toxin

Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) - also used as an engine de-greaser

Alkyl-Phenol Ethioxlades - a chemical used in shampoos that has been shown to reduce sperm count

Selenium Sulfide - used in anti-dandruff shampoos and can cause irritation to skin, mucous membranes and eyes.

Ok, so now we know what caused our itchy scalp, what can we do to remedy it?

Here are a couple of excellent home remedies for an itchy sore scalp. I hope you find them useful!

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DANDRUFF CURE

This is a famous old folk remedy that has been used for centuries and still used with great success today..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?"

Check out how to prepare and use it below...and if you don't have any apple cider vinegar, don't worry as there's a simple substitute you can use instead

  • Wash hair with natural pH balanced shampoo
  • Mix apple cider vinegar with warm water (2 parts vinegar to 1 part water). Adding a few drops of natural oils like Lavender or Rosemary will cleanse the scalp further and fragrance your hair
  • Pour or spray mixture onto your scalp, massage in and leave to dry. No need to rinse out
  • For stubborn dandruff, a stronger mixture can be made (try one-to-one ratio of vinegar to water)
  • Lemon juice can also be used instead of apple cider vinegar.

Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar will give you the best results.

CHAMOMILE SCALP REMEDY FOR INFLAMMATION AND CONDITIONING

Chamomile is a flower that is renowned for its cosmetic and conditioning benefits to skin and hair! It makes a great conditioner for your hair and also enhances colour in blond and red hair. You can add a glow to your skin by washing your face with chamomile tea a few times a week.

Chamomile is also good to use as a compress for inflammation and chamomile oil dabbed on scalp sores is very soothing. Apply to the scalp to soothe itching.

Chamomile tea is readily available from the tea section of your supermarket or you can make your own with the recipe below:

-Boil a pint of water and add 2 teaspoons of chamomile flowers.

THE MAGIC OF OATMEAL

- Boil 6 cups of water and slowly add 10 ½ tablespoons of rolled oats
- Simmer for half an hour taking care not to burn the mixture.
- Strain the water into a separate bowl and mix with rosemary oil or the water from boiled rosemary stalks (with the leaves on)
- This is fantastic for a sore scalp when dabbed on and left for 10 minutes then rinsed off.

BAY LAUREL LEAF ANTI-DANDRUFF TINCTURE
  • Boil two cups of water then remove from heat.
  • Add 1 and a half tablespoons of crushed bay leaves.
  • Allow to steep for about ½ an hour then strain.
  • After washing your hair, massage mixture into scalp and leave for about an hour before rinsing off.

RINGWORM WALNUT REMEDY
  • Crush 10 unripe walnuts and soak in 4 cups of water
  • Boil for 15 minutes.
  • Let cool and apply liquid to affected areas.

FENUGREEK SEEDS REMEDY FOR ITCHY SCALP AND DANDRUFF

Fenugreek seeds can be used as a simple homemade dandruff cure. Fenugreek (also known as Methi) is very popular in Indian cooking and the seeds can be purchased from most supermarkets and health stores these days. A 100 gram bag should cost you no more than $1.

  • Take 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds and soak overnight in water
  • In the morning grind the soft seeds into a fine paste
  • Apply this paste all over scalp and leave for half an hour
  • Rinse off thoroughly with soap nut solution
  • A teaspoon of lime juice on the last rinse will work wonders

I hope you find these itchy scalp remedies useful! There are tons more available in the "Dry Itchy Scalp Remedies" ebook!

Itchy Scalp and Hair Dyes

What Nasties Are Lurking In Your Hair Dye?

Hair dyes can cause allergic reactions, typically resulting in a red, burning itchy scalp. This problem can usually be dealt with fairly easily if action is taken early on, when you first notice some irritation or something simply not quite right with your scalp.

Many off-the-shelf hair dyes contain some pretty strong and nasty stuff. The most dangerous and highly publicised is Phenylenediamine (PPD), which is a horrible irritant that can cause an itchy scalp, severe dermatitis, and even bronchial asthma.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Ammonia are two other evil critters that lurk inside most mass-produced hair dyes

Are There Natural Alternatives?

Yes there are. Henna is a marvellous natural hair dye alternative and can be mixed with various other herbs to produce a vast range of colours.

Chamomile is highly beneficial and conditioning as a natural dye for light hair. It can also soothe a painful, itchy scalp caused by reactions to bog-standard hair dyes.

Chamomile is easily found and available in most stores. You can also make your own chamomile tea by boiling the flowers themselves and letting it steep for a while.

Itchy Scalp and Hair Loss

An itchy scalp and hair loss can be very frustrating and worrying, since there can be a number of factors which cause or aggravate the hair loss. However, the hair loss caused by itchy scalp problems is not always permanent, and will often grow back once the main itchy scalp problem is sorted out.

By taking swift action to properly diagnose and treat the itchy scalp and hair loss you can avoid any long term scarring that may arise from the itchy scalp irritation, and therefore allow the hair to begin growing back.

Problems that involve an itchy scalp and hair loss can be things like Folliculitis, Ringworm (tinea capitis), Psoriasis, and Sebhorreic Dermatitis.

Take a look at my website on Itchy Scalp and Hair Loss to discover more about these afflictions and how to treat them.

Also have a read of my itchy scalp hair loss articles here and here which will give you some more information on the causes of your itchy scalp and hair loss, and what you can do about it.

Avoiding the use of harsh shampoos can minimise the itchy scalp problem, as well as using natural oils such as Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil and Lavender Oil. Rosemary and Lavender are great at stimulating hair growth as are Birch, Jojoba and Thyme.

Another effective natural cure for hair loss is the application of coconut milk all over the scalp. By massaging it into the areas affected by hair loss, it will nourish the hair and promote hair growth.

The coconut milk is prepared by grinding coconut shavings and squeezing them well.

Let Me Know What You Think Of My Lens

Hi ya, I have been suffering bouts of hair loss (thining) for ten years now. I have no idea of the trigger. All I know is that as soon as my scalp starts itching, the hair loss follows. I have been everywhere and not one person can tell me what the cause is. They all say my scalp looks great... no spots, no dry skin, nothing at all, so they put it down to stress. My life is no different to the next persons and the only time I get stressed is when the hair starts falling out, not before. When I get a particularly bad bout, like now, I start a course of Viviscal tablets which after a few weeks does the trick. However they are expensive and they still don't tell me the cause........ PLEASE HELP

I never heard of such a thinly veiled masochistic urge for self-destruction! Get some psychological and counselling treatment for your confidence instead of all this ultra-stupid image obsessed hair dye nonsense. You are only human and prone to the most dangerous diseases in the animal kingdom, cancer for one!

Hey Lens, I have the same problems like others have mentioned on here. My scalp itches after dyeing it, my hair is slightly brown but I looks nice when its dark black. The weird thing is I have always dyed my hair with the same product and this itchyness started recently. Can you please recommend a natural black non-itchy hair dye product. Thanks in advance for helping my itchy head...
