'It's a Wonderful Life' is based upon the short story called "The Greatest Gift" by Philip Van Doren Stern. "The Greatest Gift" was inspired by a dream. Philip worked on the story for over a decade.
Philip tried to get "The Greatest Gift" published. After failing, Philip published the short story himself and sent it to friends for Christmas.
A film producer saw it and showed the Christmas story to Cary Grant. Cary Grant showed interest in being the lead character. Motion picture rights for the story were purchased for $10,000 in 1944.
