Quotes Of The Day

From The Founding Fathers

type=text"As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights. Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. "If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute." --Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791

Google Checkout Increases Fees to Sellers

March 13, 2009 - Friday
Google Checkout Increasing Fees

From Google Checkout

Google Checkout's transaction processing fees will be changing. We'll be
transitioning from our 2.0% + $0.20 per transaction rate to a new
tiered fee structure, where the rates will vary depending on the
dollar amount of your monthly sales processed through Checkout.
The rate you'll be charged beginning on May 5, 2009 will be based
on your sales processed through Checkout during the month of April
2009. Each month thereafter, we'll continue to use the prior
month's sales volume to determine your transaction processing
rate. For more details about the new rates, please visit
Google Checkout

We'll also be discontinuing the AdWords free transaction
processing promotion on May 5, 2009. Any AdWords transaction
processing credits accrued during April 2009 will be applied
towards transactions that occur on May 1-4, 2009.

Fees are the same for all payment types (Visa, MasterCard,
American Express, and Discover) and there are still no monthly,
setup, or gateway fees. For cross-border transactions, there will
be an additional 1% fee assessed per transaction. To learn more
about Google Checkout fees, please visit

Online Shopping Malls

OnLine Shopping Malls
Since the first boycott of eBay in February 2005, due to increases in eBay fees and other member restrictions, many former eBay Sellers turned to upstart alternative auction/marketplace sites, in hopes of nurturing a "new eBay",finding a home for their wares, and a place where they could economically do busines.

A few alternative sites have faired well; but most disgrundled
Sellers have found that the bulk of the Buyers still have not
migrated from eBay; and that sales, for the most part, on the
alternative sites have been dismall.

As a result many Sellers, searching for their niche, have decided to
open their own independent website store. Developing a website can
be challenging; but very rewarding. There are hundreds of Online
Mall sites to choose from. Here are a few that I think are promising:

1. CHShops Online Mall
2. Power Sellers Unite
3. Ruby Lane

Check them out and see if they can satisfy your buying and selling needs.

Hammered Aluminum Collectibles

November 24, 2008 - Monday

Hammered Aluminum Collectibles

If you are looking for a great metal to collect - aluminium is an excellent choice. Many things made out of aluminium were quite popular in their original day because of their very reasonable prices. Today aluminium collectables can still be quite reasonable when comparing their prices to other collectables. If you are interested in getting into collecting metal and are doing so on a budget - aluminium may very well be a wise choice for you.

Many like the idea of collecting hammered aluminium. The look is old fashioned and many find hammered aluminum quite attractive. Popular makers include Rodney Kent, Everlast and Continental. Serving pieces such as trays and silverware were made out of hammered aluminum. Vanity pieces for personal use were also made out of hammered aluminum. Silent butlers were also a popular item made out of hammered aluminum. Trays are considered a very collectable hammered aluminium item.

Canterbury Arts is one of the lesser-known and smaller American companies that produced decorative aluminum serving pieces during the middle of the 20th century. Two artists, Chester C. Pflanz and J. Hatterick (or Hattrick), ran the firm, which appears to have operated in upstate New York in the 1940s.

Buenilum is another company that produced decorative aluminum pieces. BW Buenilum which the BW stands for Frederic Buehner-Warner. Buehner studied with Kem Weber and Walter von Nessen under Bruno Paul at The Deutscher Werkbund Germany. The Deutscher Werkbund (German Work Federation) was a German association of architects, designers and industrialists, an important precursor to the Bauhaus. It was founded in 1907 in Munich. Frederic Buehner emigrated to the United States in 1929. In 1933 he registered "Buenilum" which is the mark on the base.

Pictured above is a hand wrought leaf tray by Buenilum.

Pfaltzgraff Gourmet Royale Dinnerware

A Collectible Pottery Pattern Discontinued in the 1980's.

Pfaltzgraff Gourmet Royale Pottery

Many years ago my hubsand and I received, as a wedding gift, a starter set of Pfaltzgraff dinnerware, in the Gourmet pattern. Much later, when we decided to add to the set, it was unfortunately determined that Pfaltzgraff had discontinued the pattern. So I began haunting Antique Shops and Thrift Stores, looking for Gourmet pieces. In these places I have found many things in the Gourmet pottery by Pfaltzgraff--pieces that I did not even know Pfaltzgraff produced.

My kitchen cabinets are now full of Gourmet casserole dishes, soup tureens, all manner of coffee cups, serving dishes of all shapes and sizes, hot plates, pitchers, bowls--you name it, we probably have it. EXCEPT for the few pieces I am still looking for; i.e., beer steins and a set of canisters. And, of course, I am sure there are Gourmet pieces out there somewhere that I am still not aware of, since the Pfaltzgaff Pottery Company did not publish or keep a list of the Gourmet pieces they produced from the fifties through the 1980's.

If anyone knows a source for the Gourmet items I am looking for, I would be glad to hear from them.

And as usual, I have collected duplicates of many Pfaltzgraff Gourmet pieces during my journeys to Antique Shops, Thrift Stores and Garage Sales. See the Pfaltzgraff items I have for sale at:
Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry .

Vintage SPI Games, New in Box, Never Opened

Vintage SPI Games, New in the Box, never opened

Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) was an influential American publisher of board wargames and related magazines, particularly its flagship Strategy & Tactics, in the 1970s and early 1980s. It produced an enormous number of games and introduced innovative practices, changing the course of the wargaming hobby in its bid to take control of the hobby away from then-dominant Avalon Hill. It went bankrupt in 1982.

See our New in the box, never used, selection of SPI Board Games and a few like-new, seldom used SPI Board Games at our www.chshops.com Mall Store at Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry.

Silverplate vs Sterling Silver

How Can You Tell?

Wednesday, November 12, 200

Silverplate vs. Sterling Silver

What is the advantage (if any) over silverplated flatware vs. sterling flatware, other than the difference in price? Will silverplated flatware last longer than sterling flatware? What should I look for in selecting silverplated and/or sterling flatware? How should I care for each? If my silver comes from England, how can I tell if it is sterling?

Silverplated is either pure but usually sterling silver plated over a base metal.

Sterling silver is .925 silver with a .075 additive, usually copper. Sterling made in the USA after approximately the 1850's always has a sterling mark. It may say Sterling. It may be.925 or show the fraction 925/1000. If it does not have this mark it is not sterling. It can also be tested with an acid to determine its content. This should only be done by a professional.

Sterling silver always retains it intrinsic silver value & usually a value also as tableware. Silverplate has no intrinsic silver value. It is not
worth the refining costs to try to redeem the silver. It has very little resale value as tableware.

Sterling will last forever if you want to use it and take care of it. Most Silverplate will last approximately 20 years or less depending on use with the proper care.

When buying either your sterling or silverplated pattern, choose a pattern because you like it. Choose something that will last over the changing eras of your life. When choosing your china, crystal & silverware, choose something that compliments each other. But most of all, you are the one that you have to please. So choose what you like.

English sterling silver is marked with a series of four or five small hallmarks. The standing lion with his right front paw raised (The lion passant ) is the most commonly seen sterling quality mark. The other marks indicate the city of origin, the maker, and the year of manufacture. Some of the marks will include the face of the monarch.

See our selections of Sterling Silver Jewelry at our www.ChShops.com Mall Store at Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry.

An Interesting Story of Corning Ware Products

CorningWare Ain't Corning Ware No More

Here is a great article by Joe Ekaitis on the story of Corning Ware products.

"CorningWare" ain't Corning Ware no more.
Mar 29 '06 (Updated Dec 28 '06)

The Bottom Line If you're lucky enough to own some genuine Corning Ware Pyroceram cookware, take good care of it. Today's "CorningWare" stoneware is no substitute for the real thing.

Mother is lucky.

Her Corning Ware is the real thing made in the USA from a space-age scientific miracle: Corning Pyroceram. Today's "CorningWare" is a stoneware imposter imported from overseas by World Kitchen who licenses the registered trademark "CorningWare" from Corning Incorporated.

A Bit of Carnival Glass History

Monday, November 10, 2008
A Bit of Carnival Glass History

Carnival glass is an inexpensive pressed glass, made as both functional and ornamental objects, always iridescent and found in a wide spectrum of colors. It was produced in the U.S., Britain, Australia, and several European and Asian countries from the early 20th century until the present. Carnival glass gets its iridescent sheen from the application of metallic salts while the glass is still hot from the pressing, then re-firing the glass. Glass workers sometimes refer to carnival glass as "dope glass" because the process of applying the iridescent coloring to the surface is called "doping".

Kramer 50s Vintage Faux Pearl Earrings

A great Kramer collector's item

Saturday, November 08, 2008
Kramer 50s Vintage Faux Pearl Earrings

Kramer Jewelry Creations was established in 1943 and ceased operations by the late 1970s. Kramer or Kramer of New York was a leader in making fine costume jewelry. They first used the mark around 1943, and produced jewelry using the best quality rhinestones available. The early Kramer jewelry is sought after by most ardent collectors of Kramer costume jewelry. Marked "Kramer of NY" and then "Kramer of NY City" and in the 1950s "Kramer" on oval plaque and after just "Kramer".

Pictured above is a fine example of Kramer 50s 60s Vintage Clip On Earrings with Faux Pearl. Measuring 3/4 Inch on each trangular side, these lovely Kramer creations have a faux pearl at the center of each earring; and are marked "Kramer" on the back. Buy these at our www.ChShops.com Mall Store at Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry.

eBay Begins Enforcing Paperless Payment Policy

Tuesday, February 03, 2009

eBay.com has begun blocking listings which offer to accept paper
payments. The new Accepted Payments Policy was introduced on 20th
October 2008, but sellers were given a grace period up to 15th
January 2009 to update their listings.

eBay say they've started blocking "based on descriptions where
sellers are most likely to still have violating text, and where we
are confident our filters have high accuracy". In other words if your
listing still offers to accept checks (cheques for our UK readers )
or money orders you won't be able to list them.

eBay will scan sellers additional checkout instructions (additional
payment instructions in the UK) to start with as that's the most
likely place sellers will mention payment methods. They'll then step
up their filters to scan listing descriptions as well when
determining which listings to block.

Sellers should be reassured that eBay's filters are intelligent
enough to differentiate between "check out my Store" and "personal
check", although I'd probably recommend you don't include text
like "We don't accept personal checks" as that might be filtered
incorrectly.
