IVF Treatment

The term In vitro fertilization (IVF) literally means fertilization "in glass" and refers to the process where a woman's eggs are fertilized outside of her body in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred back into the uterus a few days later.IVF follows a similar path for most couples. First, the ovaries are stimulated with fertility drugs, after which the eggs are retrieved and put together with sperm in the lab. Then, any resulting fertilized eggs are transferred to the woman's uterus. A variety of additional assisted reproductive technology treatments are available in addition to basic IVF. They may be used depending on a couples specific fertility problems, goals, age, and past success or failure rates. IVF is specifically recommended for women with absent, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. It is also often used in cases of unexplained infertility, in some cases of male factor infertility and can be used in combination with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) in cases of severe male factor infertility.

IVF Treatment Step By Step

  • Stimulation of the ovaries to encourage development and maturation of the eggs.

  • Retrieval of the Eggs.

  • Fertilization of the eggs and culture of the embryos.

  • Embryo Transfer.
  • How much does IVF cost?

The average IVF cost is $12,000, but it can be as much as $15,000. It may be as low as $10,000, but it's rarely lower than that. These prices are for one cycle of IVF.
If a fertility clinic tells you that their IVF costs less than $10,000, they are probably leaving something out from their price quote. Ask them if their price quote includes everything, including fertility drug purchases, ultrasound and monitoring costs, blood work, and any options they consider "extra".
If you have frozen embryos from a previous cycle and want to use them, doing so is significantly cheaper than doing a complete IVF cycle with fresh embryos. The average cost for a frozen embryo transfer (FET), is about $3,000.

    Hurdles and IVF Success Rate

Starting IVF treatment can be an exciting but nerve wracking experience. Usually, IVF treatment is pursued once other treatments have failed, following months of trying to get pregnant unsuccessfully. IVF treatment is the very first treatment tried when an egg donor is being used, there are severe cases of male infertility or a woman's fallopian tubes are blocked. Still, this often comes after years of trying to get pregnant, followed by a slew of fertility testing. If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't feel bad. IVF treatment is quite stressful. Just looking over the schedule of ultrasounds, blood work, injections and so on can have you feeling fragile.

Studies show that the potential for success with IVF treatment is the same for up to four cycles. Generally, the live birth rate for each IVF cycle is 30 to 35% for women under age 35, 25% for women between the ages of 35 and 37, 15 to 20% for women between the ages of 38 and 40 and 6 to 10% for women after age 40.

IVF Can Lead To Risky Multiple Pregnancies and Brain Damage in Babies!

It is a known fact that since the Westmead IVF program began in 1984, approximately 20-25% of our pregnancies have been multiple (twins or triplets). This result is similar to those obtained in other Australian IVF programs. Multiple pregnancy (including twins) carries an increased risk of very serious consequences, including a premature birth and a nine-fold increase in the risk of cerebral palsy (brain damage) in the babies.

Infertility is a message from your body telling you something is WRONG inside

Infertility and insulin resistance/hormonal related disorders, are like an alarm signal warning you that your house (your body or reproductive system) is on fire. By ignoring those messages, your condition is bound to get worse. When your house is on fire, you cannot shut off the alarm, go to sleep and expect everything to return to normal.
By using drugs to shut your body's alarm system, or painful surgical procedures you are practically ignoring your body's messages and neglecting the root cause of your problem, thus making your condition worse in the long run. The only way you can ever reverse your infertility is from within by listening to what your body is trying to tell you, work with it and become pregnant naturally.
