Rambo (2008) Movie Review By: Richard Humphries

Sylvester Stallone doing another Rambo film, how hilarious was the idea when it was first announced? The man is in his 60s and doing another shoot 'em up in a very politically correct world where the over the top violence of the two Rambo sequels would be frowned upon. Well, I can say Rambo is a solid action film and the best Rambo since First Blood.

Taking place in Southeast Asia, we find John Rambo living in solitude in Thailand. He is approached by a group of Christian missionaries to take them into Burma, where the Burmese military has been indulging themselves with a bit of genocide. He grudgingly takes them upriver and deposits them at a small town. Several days later, their pastor comes to visit him; the missionaries have been captured by the military and are being held captive. Originally signed on to take a group of mercenaries into Burma, Rambo tags along, one last mission.

Now the storyline is ripped straight from headlines of newspapers. Armed groups slaughtering thousands of innocent people in waves of mass genocide is something that gets human rights groups blood pumping and gets most people to change the channel. Stallone takes one of the greatest crimes of human existence and uses it as the start off point for his film. While I was expecting this to play only a minor role in the film and was to be glazed over in favor of saving violence for when Stallone gets into Burma, I was surprised at the sheer brutality of what happens to the civilians. I won't say what it is, but it is an explosive opening that few will forget and the attack on the village is griping and shocking at the same time for in a film that takes violence back to the hyper-real, the violence with these scenes are realistically taken and should strike some people in the gut and hopefully take notice of these atrocities. Blending action with social comment, Rambo puts itself ahead of others, while people change their channels on TV when they see this happen in real life, they are forced to confront it here.

Its been a while since I have watched Rambo II and III, but I still remember basically the same storyline of Rambo needing to rescue someone and killing a lot of people in the process of going from point A to point B. With the barest amount of injuries of course since he is a one man army. However, Stallone decides to make this Rambo far more realistic and sympathetic than the previous two incarnations.

We see Rambo fairly disgusted with the outside, saying that he has no interest in leaving Thailand as nothing ever changes. He came home from Vietnam a trained killer and was rejected by America, and so he has returned to the region that has created him, though to be there for far more peaceful purposes. Also unlike the previous two films where Rambo could squeeze off hundreds of rounds from the same M16 (which only carries 30) without reloading and comes out a fire fight without an injury, this Rambo actually bleeds and is far more human than what he was before.

The action is tight and gritty napalm fueled extravaganza. Stallone takes Newton's Laws of Motion and throws them out the window; people are flying like a freakishly bloody version of Cirque du Soleil. While the film is roughly shot and tightly edited, Stallone doesn't dip too far into the MTV movie feel and offers us very gritty yet still sensible action scenes. With a finale that is an explosive rush bullet and body ballet, Rambo's action ends itself on a high note and won't disappoint the viewer.

Like I have said, Isaac Newton is turning over in his grave once he hears of the complete disregard for his Laws. There is more than one time where a man is shot and goes flying back six-ten feet, while the fifty caliber rifle and machine gun are powerful weapons they can saw a man in half but they can't throw the person back several meters. To go along with the exploding limbs, there is plenty of blood to be thrown around for that, so the film is fairly wet, there is also a gutting and throat ripping to boot. Needless to say, this ain't for the kiddies.

Stallone has always gotten a lot of prods over his career for his acting and his mumbling tirade at the end of First Blood. For the dialogue scenes, Stallone brings heart to the character and gives him more depth than that of his previous 1 note fairly pissed off one man army in II and III. For a man in his 60s, Stallone gets physical in solid form and doesn't miss a beat. Like Schwarzenegger in Terminator 3, Stallone proves he is a force to be reckoned with and still has a lot of energy left in him.

Overall, Rambo is an action film with a timely social comment in it that doesn't let itself be overburdened with that. Rambo is action and while some might not appreciate the time spent building up to it, it is a solid action piece that will satisfy fans of the series and makes the perfect bookend to the series.
