Featuring the website's signature Puking Pumpkin, and spanning everything from Drowning Pumpkin, Crime Scene Pumpkin, and Cannibal Pumpkin to Electrocuted Pumpkin and other never-before-seen designs, this gleefully gory guide is nothing short of a manifesto to take back Halloween from the cheerful, the cutesy, and the parent-sanctioned. For the egg-throwing, toilet tissue-streaming, window-soaping teenager in all of us, finally- a whole new way to celebrate October 31.
Jack-o'-Lanterns
The term "Jack-o'-lantern" came from an Irish folk tale of the 18th century. Jack was an Irishman. He had tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree. He then cut a cross symbol in the tree trunk, thus trapping the Devil in the branches. When Jack died, he was unable to again access to Heaven because of his meanness. The Devil, having a long memory, would not allow him into Hell. So he was forced to walk the earth endlessly. The devil took pity on him and gave him a piece of coal to light his path. Jack put it inside a hollowed-out turnip that he had been eating.

Keene, NH Pumpkin Festival
We love to bring our jack o' lanterns to the festival
The first pumpkin festival was held on Main Street in Keene, NH in 1991. It started as a modest event that was held in the hopes of attracting visitors to the downtown area. They had only 600 carved pumpkins lit around Central Square that year. Thousands of people visited the downtown area to trick-or-treat and view the pumpkins.
The festival had been declared a success and was held again the following year. This was the year the festival was to make its first foray into the Guinness Book of World Records with 1,628 carved pumpkins lit at one time.
In the third year, the festival moved to a Saturday late in October and was held rain or shine. Even the flood of 2005 just weeks before the festival didn't keep visitors from trying to top the record with an impressive 22,157 pumpkins!
They topped their record in 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000. Then in 2003 they established the standing record with an official tally of 28,952 pumpkins. In 2009, they broke their own record with 29,762 pumpkins.
That's a lot of pumpkins! Will 2010 be the year the record is broken again?

This was our daughter's first jack o' lantern. It's a tragic story. She loved this Elmo pumpkin dearly, but as you might well imagine, nature took it's course and it began to get moldy and squishy. It was sitting on our front porch and needed to go. My dh decided to kick it's face in one evening as our sweet, young daughter watched. She was nearly traumatized. For weeks she would go into a rant about what she witnessed if Elmo was even brought up.

- Fun lens! We haven't carved ours yet this year, but I think we'll just do the traditional smileys. That creativity is for an especially skilled carver ;)

- I did some pumpkins with the designs you can buy and they turned out really nice. We usually end up painting now as it is not quite as messy. Nice lens!
