Custom Oil on Canvas Family Portraits

Jack Spiegelman is a talented writer and artist who lives in Los Angeles. For my husband Warren's birthday, I asked Jack to paint a portrait with no restrictions whatsoever on color, size, or medium. We're both fans of Jack's work and were happy to give him carte blanche on the assignment, curious to see what he'd come up with. So Jack came to the house and spent about an hour visiting and taking pictures of Warren with his upright bass. A few weeks later, Jack's custom oil-on-canvas masterpiece was complete. Because of the square size (24 by 24") the painting works perfectly as an avatar and has since become Warren's identity on MySpace, Facebook, IMDb, and even here on Squidoo. The original canvas hangs in our living room.

Jack Spiegelman Shooting Pigeons

Shooting Pigeons (and other satisfactions)

Essays by Jack Spiegelman

Excerpt: Gringo Paradise

From Shooting Pigeons (and other satisfactions)

My teacher was Señorita Nillson. Señorita Nillson was from Argentina. She was blonde, built, bubbly. She had energy to burn. Her first words were these: Learning a language is like learning a musical instrument. It is exactly the same—lo mismo. You are using your mouth the way a pianist or guitar player uses their fingers—to produce patterns of sound that have pitch, dynamics, rythym, phrasing. How these sounds expel themselves from your mouth—either as gibberish or articulate speech—depends on one thing and that only: practice. The musician must play, play, play. The language student must speak, speak, speak. There is no other way.

It is important not to think. Thinking occurs in English. You must think in Spanish. The only way to do this is to start talking.

You have to throw it out there. I repeat: throw it out there. Throw it out there, throw it out there, throw it out there. Humiliate yourself. There is no way to avoid this. It's how you learn. But let me say something: it's like bowling. No matter how bad you are there is somebody worse.

Señorita Nillson favored the sink or swim method. This took the form of little skits we were called upon to perform—including the classic restaurant scene in which a meal is ordered
and there is a problema with the food.

It was brutal.

But it was like she said: there is always somebody worse.

I love your husband's portrait, and I love Jack's artwork, especially portraits of the children. My favorite is Jennifer!

How about an update on Jack's sales? Oh, getting my day started with "The World According to Jack." He reminds me a bit of Robert DeNiro -- for some reason. I could really see Jack on a show like the Sopranos or something. Interesting ideas! Oh, I'd love to see a video of "Cooking With Jack."

Glad you like it. We have two originals and a few smaller reprints. Jack's originals are stunning. The digital photos don't do them justice at all. He's supposed to be doing my portrait too.

Wow Wow Wow -- Wow Wow wee wow wow! Tweeted my WOW. Love his style -- that is some kind of art that I would LOVE to hang on our walls -- I'd even make room for it. ;)
