Discover Artist Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano is one of the most popular living artists in the world but not with critics and so-called experts.

It seems impossible to most ordinary people that an artist whose prints outsell those of most others, whose work appears on all kinds of articles from postcards to mugs, posters to umbrellas, and whose most famous painting sold for £744,800 at auction should be shunned by art critics and public gallery curators.

This is the case for Jack Vettriano, self-taught painter and former mining engineer from the Scottish coalfields. His sometimes romantic, other times sinister paintings, strike a chord with people of all kinds from all around the world.

I really love this book with its many beautiful reproductions of Jack Vettriano's paintings.

"Creative people are stifled somehow by domesticity.

They need to have late nights and bad mornings."

Jack Vettriano includes a biography written by Anthony Quinn but its real value is in its wealth of pictures. There are about thirty new images, exhibited in June 2004, some recently rediscovered works, plus the best of the paintings previously published in other books.

The biography and discussion of Vettriano's work is relatively short but there are 160 plus colour pictures in all, with more than 30 of them being full page illustrations of the artist's work. The quality of reproduction is excellent and anybody who appreciates his paintings will love the book.

Why is Jack Vettriano's Work So Fascinating?

Mysterious and Enigmatic Paintings

Elegy for a Dead Admiral

Perhaps it's because they provide glimpses of a particular moment in somebody else's life and we look at them and wonder what happened. Why are two people in evening dress dancing on a beach while a butler holds an umbrella? What is happening in 'Elegy for a Dead Admiral'? Who is the 'Missing Man' and why is he missing?

There is a particular style to the men and women in Vettriano's pictures: the men are hard-edged and mysterious, the women seductive and enigmatic. His people seem trapped by love and passion.

This is the most recent book about Jack Vettriano and was published in May 2009. This is not a large format coffee table book so bear that in mind if you decide to buy it.

Why do I wonder if it is the artist's world? It uses the paintings that have a backdrop of bars, clubs, racetracks, and bedrooms and this fits my image of him.

I really, really, really like Jack Vettriano. I have a lovely framed print of Mad Dogs and often sit and stare at it, imagining the story behind the picture. Sometimes I could just jump into the frame and walk out on the damp sand myself.

it is so nice to see one of my favourite artists being recognised. he comes from my part of the world and had suffered more criticism than any other artist I know of. We Brits are funny folk...

Interesting introduction to the artist, Jack Vettriano. His work is unique. I like his recurring themes of the beach, beautifully dressed people, and 'umbrellas'. My daughter is an artist and while completely her studies for her BFA she taught me (the 'unobservant, uninformed non-artist') how to notice certain details in the paintings of a particular artist so that forever afterward you could recognize their work immediately. I've never heard of Jack Vettriano before today, but I will recognize his artwork from now on.

It surprises me that Jack Vettriano has been shunned by Art Critics. I love his work.

Critics say that technically he's not a good painter, that his work has no soul, they are merely decoration, etc.

I think they ignore the mystery and stories we glimpse in them. It's this mysterious quality that gives them their fascination.

I've never seen an original painting by Vettriano (they aren't exhibited in public galleries) so I can't comment on the artist's technical ability.
