Training the Stubborn Breed

Jack Russell Terriers have unlimited energy. The Jack Russell Terrier is strong willed and determined which makes it one of the most challenging breeds to properly train.

My Jack Russell Terrier Vinny (pictured left) is a sheer pleasure, but was a handful when I first began his training. Owning a treasure like a Jack Russell Terrier is a lifetime commitment. Starting out with proper training ultimately affects your dogs happiness, and yours! Like many of you I turned to the Internet for a dog training program that was easy to understand and one that would work!

I bought a couple of ebooks but I found them boring. Meanwhile Vinny was running circles around the coffee table. Then one long frustrating day I found what I thought was a solution I could work with.

People often learn best from videos or DVD's since our brains can take in the information both from seeing and from hearing -- and that is why I think this series of online videos by dog trainer Dove Cresswell are so effective.

Dove Cresswell, has noteworthy experience in Hollywood to back up her sound methods. Her highly rated credentials establish great confidence in the fact that she delivers a quality product. Wouldn't you like to learn from a Hollywood set dog trainer? Some of the things that those dogs do are simply amazing. Of course, they are simple to do if you have the secrets and know how. Dove delivers on all fronts.

Dove Cresswell: dog obedience trainingAsk yourself if you learn better by reading or watching. If you like to watch videos then this just might be the package for you. The impact of video where you can see and hear an expert dog trainer methodically go through all the steps of teaching a dog many times does wonders to show you how it is done. Remember the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words", and then let your mind think about how many words a video is worth. If you would learn better by sight and hearing then I would highly recommend this program for you.

Her course is a full online course. The downside is that you need to be connected to the Internet to fully utilize this course. The upside, though, is that the course can deliver a whole lot more than ebook only courses.

The course consists of 7 multimedia lessons. These are in fact fully narrated and fully illustrated slideshows, that teach you what to do and what not to do, while enabling you to see exactly how things should be done, and hear in what tones commands and praise should be given. Below is one of the slides (without the audio):  View Dove's FREE Sample Video HERE.

Every important dog training technique has been photographed and every single instruction recorded to explain in plain English everything you need to know! These simple steps make sure you and your dog have FUN as well as learn!

I've been on my soapbox long enough. Want to go right to her website and find out about these convenient online dog training videos which you can watch anytime, from any computer?

Jack Russell Terrier Training - Housebreaking Tips That Work

by George Godoy (aka GGeorge)

My Jack Russell Terrier Vinny was full of playful energy when I first brought him home. He was 12 weeks old, confident and fearless. And though he had flawless breeding there was one little challenge I had to face - housebreaking my new pet. Now in theory housebreaking is simple. It is a means of preventing the puppy from going potty inside the house and affording him the opportunity to do his business outside. And though Vinny was cheerful, he could at times, by the nature of his breed, be a little stubborn. Jack Russell Terriers are creatures of habit, and as such learn by association.

Here is a solid plan for housebreaking your Jack Russell puppy.

1. When you bring your puppy home carry him from the car to the yard. Pick a spot on the grass and wait for him to potty. When he does give him lots of praise. Jack Russell Terriers are very praise oriented.

2. Jack Russell puppies need to relieve themselves about five or six times a day. Take your puppy out immediately after each meal. A full stomach puts pressure on the bladder and colon. Puppies have limited bladder control and do not know they have to go potty until the second they go. Don't expect your pup to let you know ahead of time. As a rule expect to take your puppy outdoors every two hours and first thing in the morning. Be observant, if your puppy begins sniffing while circling an area this is a good indication that he has to potty. Immediately take him outside. By preventing accidents inside the house you will teach him that the only bathroom is the one outside.

3. Establish a regular routine for feeding and potty trips. This will help you control times he should go out and prevent accidents in the house. First thing in the morning take him outside for a potty break (remember to praise) then inside the house for playtime, meal break, back outside, nap, outside, etc. After a time your puppy will let you know when he needs to go outside. It helps to have a specific area in which your Jack Russell can relieve himself. He will catch on more quickly.

4. In spite of a regimented routine, your Jack Russell may have an occasional accident in the house. This is when corrective action is necessary. You do not need to hit your dog. The tone of your voice is enough to make your puppy know you are unhappy. A firm "No!" is all that is needed. Immediately take your pup outside to the designated area. Wait for him to go again and if and when he does, praise him. Remember, a dog learns by association and in connection with any act of wrong doing, he must receive some form of discipline in order to learn that he has done wrong. However, you must catch him in the act - it does no good to punish him for an accident he has made even five minutes earlier.

In summary, housebreaking your new Jack Russell is going to take patience. You should begin the housebreaking process as soon as you bring your new puppy home. You must be willing to invest the proper amount of time and energy for just a few weeks in housetraining. The effort you put in now will last for the rest of your Jack Russell's life.

Jack Russell Terrier Training

History of the Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terriers are a type, or strain, of working terrier; they are not pure bred in the sense that they have a broad genetic make-up, a broad standard, and do not breed true to type. This is a result of having been bred strictly for hunting since their beginning in the early 1800's, and their preservation as a working breed since. The broad standard, varied genetic background based on years of restricted inbreeding and wide out crossing, and great variety of size and type, are the major characteristics that make this strain of terrier known as a Jack Russell (a.k.a. Parson Jack Russell Terrier®) such a unique, versatile working terrier.

The Jack Russell Terrier takes it name from the Reverend John Russell who bred one of the finest strains of terriers for working fox in Devonshire, England in the mid-to-late 1800's. Rev. Russell (1795-1883), apart from his church activities, had a passion for fox hunting and the breeding of fox hunting dogs; he is also said to be a rather flamboyant character, probably accounting for his strain of terrier's notability and the name of our terrier today. His first terrier, the immortal TRUMP, is said to be the foundation of John Russell's strain of working terriers.

Everything about the Jack Russell has fox hunting in mind .... coloring, conformation, character, and intelligence. The body is compact, of totally balanced proportions, the shoulders clean, the legs straight, and most importantly, a small chest (easily spannable by average size hands at the widest part behind the shoulders). The Jack Russell must also be totally flexible, allowing him to maneuver underground. This conformation allows the terrier to follow his quarry down narrow earths. The fox is a good model for the Jack Russell-where the fox can go, so must the terrier. Although originally bred for fox hunting, the Jack Russell is a versatile working terrier to a variety of quarry including red and grey fox, raccoon and woodchuck.

Homemade Pet Food

Important Factors to Consider Before Feeding

Thinking about feeding your pet a homemade diet? It's what all the "hip" pet owners are doing these days isn't it? This can be for numerous reasons, whether they're concerned about the safety of commercial pet food or they simply want to offer their pet a variety at mealtime.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not picking on anyone who feeds their pet a homemade diet. It can be very beneficial if done correctly and for the right reasons. However, there's so much bad advice on the Internet right now about homemade pet food. It really worries me. Pet owners with good intentions may be doing their pet a disservice by following the advice of misinformed and uneducated individuals.

Feeding a homemade diet is only for the most dedicated of pet owners. Some people say that cooking for your pet is a "no-brainer". Other people say that cooking for your pet is a very complicated and labor-intensive process.

Honestly, I've been intrigued by the thought of feeding my pets a homemade diet. I don't think it's quite as complicated as many people would have you believe. But on the flip side, you do need to know what you're doing. And there's more to it than just throwing a bunch of ingredients together that seem yummy to you. Remember: dogs and cats are not people with four legs and a tail.

Some people will say, "Oh the pet food companies want you to think that formulating a pet's diet is complicated so you buy their food." A little part of that might be true, but I've read case studies and seen what happens to some pets that aren't being fed properly.

No matter who you listen to, there are a few important factors to take into consideration before embarking on this path. Before getting started I'd recommend asking yourself a few questions and answering them honestly.

Am I willing to invest the time and money necessary to prepare my pet's meals?

The bottom line is: cooking for your pet requires more time and money on your part. Think about how much time and money you spend preparing meals for yourself and your human family. Are you willing to do this for your pet too?

Careful consideration must be made when selecting recipes, shopping for ingredients, and choosing supplements. It's not as easy as searching online for a recipe. The majority of recipes you find for free on the Internet are inadequate when fed for long periods of time and are not formulated by someone trained in veterinary nutrition.

Pat

I need help with our JRT. She doesn't go poop outside, but when we leave the house she'll go on a chair, blanket - anything soft. We have to sit with her outside and wait for something to happen, and it takes forever. She was with a big Golden Retriever since we got her and they were the best buddies - when the goldie went, she went. We recently lost our goldie due to a bad strain of pneumonia, and we think our JRT is somewhat traumatized without her friend. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to re-train her? She is now 2 years old.

My Jack Russell Terrier 'Vinny' Having a Great Day...

On this day I had just bought a digital camera. I was excited to take some pics, and who better than my action hero Vinny. We went to a nearby field where I found a small wind fence. I took only five shots of the Vinnster to get this one. He was more than willing to jump another 20 times. Jack Russell Juice. Go Vinny, I love you!
