Store Your Coffee in a Jadite Coffee Jar

Jadite is a generic term that refers to jade green opaque glass dishes that were produced by various companies, including but not limited to the Anchor Hocking Glass Company, from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Jadite glassware was produced very inexpensively and in mass quantities. Because It was very durable, it was practical for use in restaurants and other institutions. It was definitely not considered fine china. It was also produced in a lighter version for use at home and often given away as part of a promotion.

I was thrilled to discover recently that there were JADITE COFFEE JARS OR CANISTERS produced for storing coffee. These pieces are handsome, very desirable and command top dollar. If you love Jadite and you can afford it, you should definitely consider adding one or more of these attractive coffee canisters to your collection.

Is It Safe To Use Jadite?

And can I put my vintage Jadite pieces in the dishwasher and microwave?

Jadite is a type of glass that has been colored using uranium compounds. It has been tested and proven to have a slight radioactivity although I read here that the amount is "not much more than one would encounter from every day background radiation" so whether you choose to store food in your Jadite dishes is a personal choice.

A Few Clarifications, a page on the Fire-King website, is an excellent resource that seeks to clear up some of the mysteries around Anchor-Hocking. They say that putting Fire-King pieces in the microwave is safe and that they have been doing so for years. They also state that old pieces of Jadite are NOT dishwasher safe. Pieces washed in the dishwasher will, over time, lose their original lustre and become hazy.

Love these Jadite coffee jars! I've seen Jadite occasionally but never the coffee jar. I store my coffee in a plain black jar, I think I'm going to look for Jadite on my next antique market trip!

I've seen Jadite mugs on eBay but never looked for a Jadite coffee jar or canister. They're beautiful and I'd love to have them in my kitchen. The green is such a beautiful color! Our coffee is just stored in its original can. Bor-ing!

Love the Jadite coffee jars. Did they make dishes too? I have an old saucer about that color.
