Achieving the ranks of Giant Squid: What you can do to join me -- JaguarJulie!

Yes, you too can be a Giant Squid on Squidoo. When the call went out to us lensmasters here on Squidoo, the challenge was to create 100 interesting and topical lenses in order to earn the honor of being a Giant Squid. I do believe a few lensmasters, if not a lot, offered a bit of mild protest as "thee asketh too mucheth! 100 lenses, how can I accomplish that?"

Well, the mighty powers that be decided to scale back the challenge to a mere 50 lenses. However, for me sitting at some 3 dozen, that number was still a wee challenge what with a normal 8-5 job. I honkered down and in no time was past the 50, and then 75 was in sight! August 31, 2007 was quickly approaching and I was ALMOST at 100. Then, the unthinkable happened ... a hard drive crash!

2008 Giant Squid of the Year

Giant Squid then Giant Squid 100 and then ...

I am humbled and honored to be the Giant Squid of the Year as voted in the 2008 Giant Squid Awards Competition, sponsored by the Giant Squid Organizers.

Thank you to Bonnie, Patti, and Robin for sponsoring this contest.

Special thanks to all of my supporters who actually voted for me -- I sure do appreciate it! I couldn't have done it without your support! ;)

Are you or aren't you?

Pass the baton please ...

Well it is that time of year again -- time for the induction of the Giant Squids and Giant Squid 100 Club members! Have you made it this time? When I became a member of the Giant Squid 100 Club in September 2007, there weren't that many of us with over 100 lenses. Today, there are quite a few other prolific lensmasters who have authored well over 100, 200, 300 lenses! Wow! Way to go Squidooers.

HARD DRIVE CRASH!

What does a Giant Squid do?
Create another lens!

I'm talking about the Squidoo Giant Squids

How you can get started ... towards your goal of 50 lenses

Yes, get started on your own personal path to becoming a Squidoo Giant Squid. At the very minimum, you can and should be able to create ONE lens per week! IMHO, that is the minimum if you seriously want to be a Giant Squid.

It's just one lens at a time ... writing about:
* what you know the most about,
* that which you feel passionate,
* yourself, your causes, your family
* your hobbies, vacations

It's easy by using the Squidoo templates:
* Hey Monkebrain--pick a fight!
* SquidBids--eBay Sellers!
* SquidFlix
* SquidLit
* SquidVids--Video Showcase!
* SquidWho--Who's Who!
* The Ever Project

Giant Squid = 50+ quality lenses

The Giant Squids 100 Club = 100+ quality lenses

Some EARLY lenses ...

I took the first step!

Ya gotta start someplace right? Well, I joined because of BzzAgent--naturally that's what my first lens discussed!

What I learned from the EARLY lenses ...

At one time, that's 2 years ago, there were not many lenses--hark! that meant these early lenses ranked high without a lot of updating.

Some lenses that got me to Giant Squid

These were created in the Summer of 2007

Naturally, since I suffered a hard drive crash, I wrote about it! But, I recovered and hit 100 lenses!

What I learned from the SUMMER of 2007 lenses ...

Those are some of lenses that got me to Giant Squidom. Well, now there are lots more lenses competing for top spots--these included!

Some of my PRIDE & JOY lenses ...

You can have fun with your lenses too!

Oh, please don't ding me just 'cause I'm blonde!!!

What I learned from my PRIDE & JOY lenses ...

As you can see, there's a lensography + some food + a 'medical' lens. Write about what YOU KNOW! I love all kinds of food, but have been picky about which I write about!

Giant Squid

March 2006 For centuries, sailors have told tales of sea monsters with massive tentacles. But it was only recently that a giant squid was actually filmed. One man has spent his life tracking the elusive creatures. When his large, powerful yacht slowed to a virtual stop, Olivier de Kersauson knew he had a problem. "I saw two arms, twice the size of my arm, grabbing the rudder." A giant squid had got caught in the propeller. "It had a lot of power and started to shake the boat." It was a sight Dr Steve O'Shea would love to have witnessed. For over 30 years he's been chasing the rare creatures. But recently, he's become aware of a disturbing trend. "Squids are incredibly good barometers of environmental health", he explains. "If I go back 10 years, I had 23 giant squids in one year. Now, because of the intensity of fishing, it's tailed down to one a year." Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Oh No, not these giant squids!

A common misconception for sure ...

Yes, I too a humble Squidoo Giant Squid thought that this is what a giant squid is! Well, not really.

The giant squid (genus: Architeuthis) is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae, represented by as many as eight species. Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size: recent estimates put the maximum size at for females and for males from caudal fin to the tip of the two long tentacles (second only to the colossal squid at an estimated , one of the largest living organisms). The mantle is about long (more for females, less for males), and the length of the squid excluding its tentacles is about . There have been claims reported of specimens of up to , but no animals of such size have been scientifically documented.

On September 30, 2004, researchers from the National Science Museum of Japan and the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association took the first images of a live giant squid in its natural habitat.Kubodera, T. & K. Mori 2005. Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 272(1581):2583-2586. Several of the 556 photographs were released a year later. The same team successfully filmed a live adult giant squid for the first time on December 4, 2006.

Need to vent or want some advice?

I'm here for ya! Just let me know if you need a little advice, constructive criticism, or a tip or two.

We owe it to Seth Godin for this wonderful opportunity ...

There would be NO Squidoo nor Giant Squids without him!

And, on top of taking time out to develop this wonderful platform of Squidoo, he's written so many great books -- most of them I've read too!

Not a prerequisite for succeeding on Squidoo, but they sure helped me!!!
