Jaidev: The Underrated Musical Genius

Ranked #13,829 in Music, #379,753 overall

Who is Jaidev?

Quick! Tell me the name of 5 Bollywood composers. Chances are that Jaidev wouldn't be one of them. Ok name 5 more. I am sure, Jaidev doesn't figure in this list either. Yet this brilliant composer gave us some of the most unforgettable music on Hindi silver screen.

This lens showcases those wonderful songs and attempts to put Jaidev on the top of your list.

I have taken this picture from http://www.downmelodylane.com/jaidev.html No one seems to know who to credit for this picture. However, since this is for a noble cause, I think no one will mind.

Then came Hum Dono

Jaidev started his filmy career 6 years before Hum Dono happened. I have listened to those songs. I almost fell asleep. Then came Hum Dono. Hum Dono had chart bursting music. It became very popular. It was also praised by the cognoscenti. Here, have a listen.

Did you know ...

... that Jaidev won the National Award for music three times? For Reshma aur Shera, Gaman and Ankahee. A mistake I say. They should have given it to him at least 4 times. For Hum Dono as well.

Jaidev: 1963

WIth Hum Dono, Jaidev came to be a name to reckon with, However, it is not that he was offered a string of movies. Hum Dono released in 1961. His next movie came only in 1963. But it was worth the wait. Mujhe Jeene Do has some fantastic foot-tapping music.

For 'Raat Bhi Hai Kuch Bigi-Bigi' Jaidev chose a very nasal chorus. That, I think, brings out Lata's sweetness even more to the fore. It is almost as if the the chorus is a musical instrument.

Jaidev: 1971

1971 saw Jaidev very busy. His songs were climbing the popularity chart rapidly. I have picked a few songs from 1971 (from Do Boond Pani and Reshma aur Shera) for your hearing pleasure. Notice that he used both Lata and Asha to great effect.

Jaidev should have persisted with Yesudas.

Jaidev: Lasting Impressions

Here are the gems from Gharonda and Gaman. I think Suresgaman jaidevh Wadekar sang his best song under the baton of Jaidev.

Jaidev: One last bow

Need to finish this lens with Ankahee, the movie for which Jaidev received his 3rd National Award. Well, if you have Pandit Bhimsen Joshi by your side, where else do you expect the National Award to go.
