When I was in high school, Jake Ryan epitomized everything I was not. Girls swooned every time they say him. My wife admits to having had a crush on him. The only problem is that Jake Ryan doesn't really exist. He's a fictional character from the movie Sixteen Candles. But somehow that hasn't stopped women from viewing Jake Ryan as the ideal, iconic American male.
According to Washington Post columnist, Hank Stuever, many women (who grew up swooning over Jake Ryan) find that their real relationships can't compare to the relationship that they imagine this Matt Dillon look-alike might provide.
