Unique Jam, jelly, Fruit Preserve, Pickle, Canning Storage Jars
John Landis Mason received a patent on his pattern for a screw on bottle top for glass canning storage jars in 1858. Glass storage jars were already in existence but it is the screw top lid system on canning jars which John Mason perfected and received a patent for.
Since the invention of his screw top glass canning jar system most of the glass jars used in canning, or preserving foods, have been commonly referred to as Mason jars.

John Mason revolutionized home canning jars...
Effectively storing food for future use was not an exact science in the old days and it often came with many risks associated with it. Food spoiled, had a tendency to be taken over by insects, or was eaten by the local small rodent populations. Canning jars were at the time one of the safest, most effective, methods of food storage. John Mason helped to perfect this method of food storage.
Glass canning and preserve storage jars were already in use when John Landis Mason invented his unique screw top canning jar system. But it was John L. Mason's invention of an effective glass canning jar system which helped improve food storage safety, and effectively simplified the preserving of canned jams, jellies, sauces, pickles, fruits, and meats from that point forward.

The history behind Mason canning jars and the Ball canning jar legacy:
In 1858 when John Landis Mason patented his canning jar system he forever changed the method by which fruit, jams, and jellies would be preserved.
Previous to the invention of the Mason canning system jars had to be sealed using a layer of wax to enclose the food within the jar. This was a risky process which often left the food vulnerable to spoilage. John Mason's canning jar system now made canning foods a much safer procedure.
Despite his discover John Mason would not be the one to cash in on his invention. Unfortunately John Mason allowed his patent to expire in 1879. This move allowed two brothers Frank and Edmund Ball to cash in on his invention. They began manufacturing canning jars using John Landis Mason's canning jar system. The Ball canning jar would become the jar most often recognized as the original Mason jar.
Snap lid canning jars were one of the earlier style canning jars.

- Love these unique canning jars. I really like receiving gifts in cool jars. Appreciated the refresher course on making jam, too. I watched my mom, an aunt, and my grandmother can so many things when I was growing up. I will probably do some canning now that I am getting back into serious gardening.

- I've never canned jam, jelly, fruit preserves or relishes but I have seen canning jars and none like yours. You are introducing a wonderful new opportunity for folks to use unique jam pickle mason jars along with so many others. Canning certainly did change food storage for the world.

- Wow! These are really awesome! I use Mason jars for my jelly already, but I have never seen these shapes before. I was just searching for apothecary jars for my craft room. I had not considered canning jars, but the adorable little pot belly (bulb) jar would be so cute in my room!

- The nice thing about canning your own food is that you can control the amount of sugar or salt that you put into your jams or preserves. It helps keep your food just the wee smidge healthier.
