Amazing Posters From The James Bond Franchise

If you've never had an opportunity to see any James Bond movie posters of the 60's, 70's and 80's get ready for your mind to be blown. Unlike today, that period was filled with beautiful jaw-dropping illustrations that made people line up in the theaters. Now I'm not saying that the posters today look bad, I just wish there was more of a balance between photo, photo manipulation and illustration.

Maybe one day Hollywood will realize just how cool posters of that era was and decide to revisit them. Until then, the only choice a Bond collector has for good posters from this is to go looking for artists like Robert E. McGinnis, Bob Peak and Dan Gouzee. Let's get started.

Artwork by Traumatron Illustration / flickr.

Dr. No

1962 British Quad (30" x 40")

dr-no-movie-poster

The poster from where the film originated has always been very popular for collectors that can afford it. Expect to pay north of $10,000 depending on condition.

James Bond Lobby Cards - Dr. No

U.S. Dr. No Lobby Cards - 1962 (11" x 14")

james-bond-lobby-cards-dr-no-1962

Although not technically a movie poster, lobby cards are still highly collectible and sought after by the same people who would buy the posters. They were typically issued in sets of eight, but there are some sets with six or twelve cards. As with posters, condition, age and the movie they were issued for is what makes up the value.

Enjoy The Posters While Listening To The Music

Part of the reason that the James Bond franchise is so successful is due to the amazing music that comes along with them. They really do add to the films and make them so much better. To the left you'll find a few of my personal favorites.

From Russia With Love

1963 British Quad (30" x 40")

from-russia-with-love-movie-poster

Although the artwork could be better, this poster is leaps and bound better than the first movie (in my opinion).

Goldfinger

1964 US 4 Door Panel Set Movie Posters (20" x 60")

goldfinger-door-panel-set

Almost all door panel posters are highly sought after by collectors due to their rarity. It takes a lot of work (and a little luck) to get a full set together. You may never see a set of James Bond movie posters like this but once. Jump on it if you find them.

Thunderball Movie Poster

1965 US One Sheet (27" x 41")

Here is where James Bond movie poster start to really look good. Robert E. McGinnis did the art for this one and you'll hear his name again. Beautiful!

Casino Royale (Spoof)

1967 US One Sheet (27" x 41")

casino-royale-movie-poster

Although this is a James Bond spoof film, collectors are constantly searching for the poster. The artwork by Robert McGinnis might have something to do with it.

On Her Makesty's Secret Service

1969 US Advance One Sheet (27" x 41")

on-her-majestys-secret-service

I don't know what it is about this film poster, but I kind of like it. I can only imagine what fans thought after they found out that Sean Connery wasn't going to be in this one. Oh, and by the way, I kind of liked the movie too. It certainly wasn't the worst of the Bond films.

Diamonds Are Forever

1971 U.S. Half Sheet (22" x 28")

diamonds-are-forever-movie-poster

Who else but the James Bond franchise could take the catchphrase of the diamond industry and turn it on its ear. Poster artwork by Robert E. McGinnis.

Live And Let Die Movie Poster

1973 US One Sheet (27" x 41")

live-and-let-die-movie-poster

I love the tarot card theme, though some might miss it with all that's going on in this poster. Art by Robert McGinnis.

I have so many good memories associated with this film. The first time I saw this on the wall at my local drive-in theater I knew I had to see it. Now that is an effective movie poster. Could be the best looking poster of the whole franchise. The amazing artwork was done by Dan Gouzee.

A View To A Kill

1985 US One Sheet (27" x 41")

Just off the heels of Conan the Destroyer Grace Jones matches wits with a super spy. She is drawn really well; I just wish I knew who the artist was. If you know, leave the answer in the comment section.

Don't Forget To Watch The 007 Films

How big is your Bond DVD collection?

I really do wish Hollywood would go back to the illustrated poster a little bit more. These posters made me want to go and see some of these films. Sometimes the poster lived up to the film and sometimes it didn't, but they did get my money. Hint. Hint.

This is one of the few newer posters that I actually like. Everything exudes Bond from the look Daniel Craig is giving to the suit he's wearing to the pistol lying at his hand.

Are you a fan of James Bond movie posters?

Or the franchise in general?

I'm not a big James Bond fan, but I love the posters. I grew up watching Roger Moore as James Bond.

The old James Bond movies were ahead of their time, that's why they are still popular to see. I love the Bond movies, all of them.

very good lens. i enjoy the bond movies. seen a few repeats.

I hope that you plan on adding some more 007 posters because you've left off a few good ones, but those with artwork by McGinnis and most of the 80's posters look the best for the most part.
  • Skip Nov 8, 2011 @ 7:00 pm | delete
I have to wonder how much longer the James Bond franchise will keep going. The new movies, while full of action, don't seem to be doing too much for me.
  • Wednesday_Elf Nov 7, 2011 @ 12:12 pm | delete
My son-in-law is a big fan of movies, a collector of movie posters, and a Huge James Bond fan. He has several of the posters you feature here. Fun review.
  • KimGiancaterino Nov 3, 2011 @ 12:58 pm | delete
What a great collection of posters. Grace Jones was pretty amazing as a Bond girl. I usually watch James Bond movies when I'm working in the garage. I've got most of them on tape, and that's where we keep the VHS player.
  • KK Oct 15, 2011 @ 5:49 am | delete
The McGinnis artwork is amazing! I also wish the movie companies would start making posters like this again.
