A Singer Songwriter from Austin, Texas

James McMurtry is a Texas singer and songwriter. His music is deeply rooted Americana and sometimes political. You might not always like what he says, but he does have an interesting way of saying it.

He was given a guitar at age seven by his father (novelist Larry McMurtry) and taught to play by his mother (an English professor). He says he learned three chords from her and then the rest by ear or watching other people.

If you are ever in Austin on a Wednesday night you will find James McMurtry with his band, The Heartless Bastards, at the Continental Club; or you might try Threadgill's.

SXSW - South by Southwest

Austin's Film, Interactive, and Music Festivals and Conferences

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring in Austin, Texas, United States. SXSW first began in 1987 and is centered on the downtown Austin Convention Center. Each of the three parts runs relatively independently, with different start and end dates.

SXSW is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 2,000 performers playing in more than 90 venues around downtown Austin over four days, in March. Though it is an industry-based event, SXSW Music links locally with events such as the annual Austin Music Awards show. SXSW is the highest revenue-producing special event for the Austin economy, with an estimated economic impact of at least $110 million in 2008.

In 1994, SXSW added film and interactive conferences. SXSW Film has become one of the world's premier film festivals, focusing on new directing talent. Similarly, SXSW Interactive has attracted a strong following among web creators and entrepreneurs. SXSW Interactive's focus on emerging technology has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. Twitter launched at SXSW Interactive in 2007.

The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to nearly 12,000 registrants. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events attract approximately 11,000 registrants to Austin every March.

Who's your favorite hometown singer songwriter?

I live in Austin and like James a lot. I no longer have a favorite musician / band as I am now 66 and do not go out very much. I went out a lot in my younger day and was a big fan of folk or singer-songwriter music. This is a really good lens.
