Toby Tyler - Ten Weeks with a Circus - James Otis

By the time that Mr. Treat got through with his long speech Toby felt very much as if he were some wonderful creature whom the skeleton was exhibiting; but he managed to rise to his feet and duck his little red head in his best imitation of a bow. Then he sat down and hugged Mr. Stubbs to cover his confusion.....

That's a short excerpt form this magnificient children's book. Classic story of a little orphan boy who runs away to join the circus, only to learn, unhappily, that his new employer is a cruel taskmaster. 30 illustrations enhance a story that will tug on the heartstrings of readers of all ages as they enter the world of an old-time traveling circus.

Toby Tyler is a small town orphan boy, bored and feeling abused on his Uncle Daniel's farm. When an un-named circus comes to town, Toby happily joins as a "candy butcher," i.e., one who sells refreshments to show patrons within the tent.

I have not read this book in over 50 years but I still remember it well. I can remember lying in bed at night reading this book and dreaming that I was right there along side Toby and sharing his adventure. I will not give away any of the plot but I can also remember a scene where my little boy tears just flowed(in am age where little boys were not supposed to cry). I loved the book then and am now buying it for my grandson!! -- James R. Rhyan (Spring Branch, Texas United States)

Toby Tyler - The Movie

:This is about the film. For the 1880 book see Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks with a Circus. For the musician previously known as Toby Tyler', see Marc Bolan.

Toby Tyler is a film released on January 21, 1960 by the Walt Disney Company, based on the 1880 childrens book Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus by James Otis Kaler. It was issued on DVD on August 2, 2005 (same day as Johnny Tremain). The film aired repeatedly on the Walt Disney anthology series, and stars several actors best known for their work on the other two pioneering Disney television shows of the late 1950s: Kevin Corcoran (better known as Moochie) from the Spin and Marty serials on Mickey Mouse Club, and Zorro co-stars Henry Calvin and Gene Sheldon who speaks in this movie. This was shot at Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall, California.

Toby Tyler - DVD

Straight from the vault of Disney's bygone classics comes this 1960 family film about a boy who joins the circus, based on the book of the same name by James Otis Kaler. Kevin Corcoran (Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson) is unsurpassed as the earnest and endearing Toby Tyler, an orphan who lives with his poverty-stricken aunt and uncle until the day he is told he's a "millstone around their necks." When the circus comes to town, Toby runs away to join the vagabond life of the big top. Although his concessionaire boss is a con man, Toby makes fast friends with Ben Cotter (Henry Calvin) and Sam Treat (Gene Sheldon) who protect him and, in the end, receive much more from Toby than they give. The movie's best moments center on Toby's camaraderie with a mischievous chimp he names Mr. Stubbs. The final circus scenes of Toby's equine acrobatics with the pretty Mademoiselle Jeanette (Barbara Beaird), and comedic stunts with Mr. Stubbs are well worth the price of admission. The three-ring comedy is sweet and simple, sprinkled with a few wholesome life lessons. Marvelously directed in Disney's vintage style by Charles Barton (The Shaggy Dog), the overall effect will tug on a family's heartstrings and funny bone. (All ages) --Lynn Gibson

One of Disney's best family classics
Based on the classic children's novel, Toby Tyler is ideal material for a Disney movie. You may remember Kevin Corcoran from several other Disney classics, including Swiss Family Robinson, Old Yeller, etc. and so forth. Here he plays a young boy who runs away from home and joins the circus. The circus adventure and comedy is a bit predictable, but well played and well served by the high Disney production values with great color, stunts, etc.

My favorite part of the movie involves Toby Tyler learning to ride and do stunts standing on a horse, and they have him tied to a pole that swings around a post to follow the galloping horse. I can't describe the scene in words, you just have to see this bit of comic genius. It's worth the price of the DVD for this one segment alone.

But if that's not enough for you, you get a plethora of circus performances and exotic animals in color. Highly recommended for the whole family to watch together. -- R. Christenson, Pine, CO, USA

Traveling Circus - Where Boby Tylers' Adventures happened

Category: File - :Barnum & Bailey clowns and geese2.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Advertisement for the Barnum & Bailey Circus, 1900.

A circus is commonly a travelling company of performers that may include acrobats, clowns, trained animals, trapeze acts, musicians, hoopers, tightrope walkers, jugglers, unicyclists and other stunt-oriented artists. The word also describes the performance that they give, which is usually a series of acts that are choreographed to music and introduced by a "ringmaster". The traditional circus is held in an oval or circular arena called a ring, which has tiered seating around its edge. In the case of traveling circuses this location is often a large tent which is nicknamed the "big top".
