Who was James Allen?

"James Allen (1864 - 1912) was a philosophical writer of British nationality, known for his inspirational books and poetry. His works have had a lasting influence on the New Thought Movement.

"Born in Leicester, England, James was 15 when his father, a businessman, was robbed and murdered. He left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. Eventually he married and became an executive secretary for a large company.

"At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment and he and his wife moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works.

James Allen died in 1912, at age 48."

Still Virtually Unknown

Although James Allen's most famous book, As A Man Thinketh (published in 1902), has inspired millions around the world and has been a major influence on many contemporary writers in the self-improvement industry, including Norman Vincent Peale, Earl Nightingale, Denis Waitley and Tony Robbins, among others, very little is known about James Allen.

As a Woman Thinketh...

Given the heavy use of the male gender in his writings, many authors have taken James Allen's classic, As a Man Thinketh, and rewritten it for the contemporary woman, while preserving its original purpose and ideas. "As a Woman Thinketh" is considered to be much easier to read and assimilate by most women and this has made this great book accessible to a much broader readership.

A New Thought Library account of James Allen

Most accounts of James Allen state that he is a literary mystery man. Some say this is due to the fact that he wished to live much as Tolstoy, yet in truth, we find that James Allen was a simple loving man who was born in Leicester, England on November 28, 1864. When he was fifteen, the family business failed and his father left for America to find work. In a tragic turn of events, his father was murdered before he could send for the family and subsequently, James left school and worked as a personal secretary for various executives of large English corporations until his volitional retirement in 1902. His literary career lasted only ten years until his death in 1912. "As A Man Thinketh" was his second book. In fact, it was only upon his wife Lily's insistence that he published the book.

This little volume (the result of meditation and experience) is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on the much-written upon subject of the power of thought. It is suggestive rather than explanatory, its object being to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that -

"They themselves are makers of themselves"

by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.
