'Now then young fellah - what about me calf???'

To a generation of English TV viewers, James Herriot will always bring to mind a youthful Christopher Timothy (pictured), who played the young vet in two the classic TV Series.

The 'real' James Herriot, was actually a man named Alf Wight, who practised in Northallerton, a market town in North Yorkshire. He was also the author of the books which have become bestsellers worldwide.

In this lens I will cover both the fictional Herriot and try to help you uncover the 'real' James Herriot, Alf Wight.

The series, filmed in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, was some of the finest 'Sunday night television' of its era, with all the family enjoying the adventures of the trio of Mr Herriot, Siegfried Farnon and young Tristan Farnon as they sought to pacify and help the farmers and animal owners of the area.

If you have never seen this glorious programme, from a gentler age, then I strongly suggest you treat yourself to a few episodes!

Let's find out a little more! You can also use the Amazon links to buy the famous books - plus the VHS Videos and DVDs of the films and series!

I bought the whole of the first and second series and it is still some of the best family TV ever made!

Enjoy!
