James Spader Gives the Odd Characters Humanity and Brilliance

The picture you see here is James Spader/Alan Shore at his best. It doesn't matter what else is going on. It doesn't matter if I have seen the show or know what the current show is about. It doesn't matter if I have seen this particular tirade many times before or if it is brand new to me.

I will always stop and watch an Alan Shore opening, closing or witness cross examination. No one does it better than Alan Shore and I don't think Alan Shore would be as good at it without James Spader.

I first remember seeing him in White Palace where he played the younger and higher social class boyfriend of Susan Sarandon. Not the best movie for either of them, but a great older chick click

But I loved him in Wolf his part was minor, but in this case he was purely a bad guy, but the stood out in this quirky movies that turns Jack Nicholson into a werewolf.. He just does everything well.

Three reasons to love James Spader

1. James Spader can hold his own with any other actor, as seen here with Candace Bergen and William Shatner in an ensemble, while making other actors actually look better.

2. James Spader started with a character unknown to himself, Alan Shore, brought The Practice back to life and took that character to another show, Boston Legal where he developed Shore into one of the most complex characters on TV, a womanizer who respects women, a liberal whose best friend is an old man conservative, someone with no scruples at all while simultaneously having more ethics than most people. You have to be there, but do go see Boston Legal if you haven't yet.

3. James Spader is a star quality actor who isn't a 'star'.

James Spader on Alan Shore:

"The most interesting heroes have a bit of villainy to them, and the most interesting villains have a certain bit of heroism in them, ... I think [Shore] intends to do the right thing, but his view of the world is very different so, to get to the right place, he sometimes takes a path that goes through a very dark forest."

I so miss Boston Legal! James Spader was the perfect Alan Shore to play next to William Shatner as Denny Crane. I really don't think any other combination would have worked. And I agree when Shore/Spader did his closing statements to the juries...well they were just remarkable. And his facial mannerisms when he was disgusted or when he was pushing the line a bit...incredible. I became a huge fan because of Boston Legal.

Great lens. I like James Spader, but I haven't seen Boston Legal (maybe it hasn't arrived on U.K. TV yet) Sounds good though.

Very cool. One my favorite scenes in television history is the Boston Legal Christmas party shooting. The whole James Spader commanding the mayhem while William Shatner set up for the shot was brilliant.

    Well don Margo.

    Thanks!
