A New Series About Food On ABC

Jamie Oliver's new television series, Food Revolution, may give Americans a much needed wake-up call to reinvent they way they think about food. Or will he? Not everybody is happy to have this English chef nosing around in the unhealthiest city in American (and arguably, the world), but he's not packing his bags just yet. Jamie's set up shop, or kitchen, in Huntington West Virginia and plans to teach the community to cook with fresh, colorful, nutrient rich ingredients and kick the habit of eating processed foods forever.

That's not all Jamie's stirring up for the show. He's turning up the heat in school cafeteria's and challenging the system to trash the frozen boxes of mystery meat and powdered food packets that magically turn into pasty, starch and sodium laden meals. This is no easy task. He's up against the strict, (and often senseless) USDA guidelines and a kitchen full of stubborn ladies who are perfectly happy with the way things are. I think Jamie's up for the challenge, but will the kids appreciate the effort and actually eat his homemade meals or will they force the system to convert back to it's menu of convenience?

Why Do We Need A Food Revolution?

Education and learning by example is the key to bringing change before it's too late!

No one can deny that many Americans, including children, will live a shorter life because of the food they choose to eat. Obesity is a growing problem that causes serious health problems to many and an early grave to some, but it doesn't have to be this way.

It is possible to buy and prepare nutritious meals, even on a small budget. Education and learning by example is the key to bringing change. Our children are depending on us to provide food that will nourish their bodies, minds and soul, but too often they get the easy options that are packed with chemicals and little or no real food.

Cooking good food from scratch is a skill that can save you money, keep you healthy, and make you and your family and friends happy. What I've tried to do in this book is pick a whole load of meals that we all love to eat and break them down to make them as simple as possible. There are plenty of clear instructions and step-by-step pictures, so whether you're an accomplished cook or a complete beginner, you'll be able to enjoy cooking and achieve great results in the kitchen.

This book is inspired by all the people I've met who thought they could never and would never learn how to cook. I believe that good home cooking is one of the most essential, fundamental skills that every single person on this planet should have in order to look after themselves, their families, and their friends. This food revolution is all about people learning how to make a recipe, then teaching that recipe to their friends and family . . . if enough people do this, pretty soon everyone will be cooking. So cook something today, then PASS IT ON!

I thought this show was great. It saddens me a bit that someone like Jamie has to step in, parents aren't doing this for their kids themselves. I realize a lot of people are not very educated when it comes to food, but isn't it your responsibility to at least TRY for your child. The kids of this show didn't know what a tomato was, no joke! That's just sad. Hopefully the more shows and movies and articles regarding health, the more people, my generation, will step up, and train the next generation to be healthy.

Interesting read. Its nice to know US is taking to him. He is making a good impact here in the UK - even got the government to intervene in issues relating to Foods in Schools.

I loved the show and think it's great that Jamie Oliver is bringing national attention to this issue. However, there are many others right in this country that have been making strides in this area over the past few years - Alice Waters being one.
