Jamie McMurray wins the Daytona 500
If you are a NASCAR fan (or married to one like me) you will no doubt recognize the name Jamie McMurray; a 33 year old Missouri native. This young man who won (what my hubby calls) the 2010 Superbowl of NASCAR racing; The Daytona 500 . On February 14, 2010 Jamie McMurray held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the race . McMurray climbed from his car and ran to the Daytona 500 logo in the infield, dropping to his knees and pounding on the painted grass (we thought maybe he was kissing the logo) before taking the checkered flag into Victory lane at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida for the first time. His emotional interview caused many eyes to tear up as they watched him cry genuine tears of happiness.

In the beginning
Jamie McMurray got his start in the Cup Series in 2002 with the Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates organization (since a merger last year has been renamed Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates). McMurray first visited a Cup Victory Lane in only his second race, at Charlotte Motor Speedway, replacing veteran Sterling Marlin following Marlin's season-ending neck injury.
While racing full time for Ganassi and Sabates in the next three seasons, McMurray never did win another race. But he did finish respectably in the point standings, finishing no lower than 13th. That included finishes of 11th and 12th, respectively, the first two years of the Chase, when 10 drivers, and not the 12 under the current format, qualified for the chance to win the title.

The man is on a role! Less than a week ago Jamie McMurray had his first win at the Daytona 500 followed by a busy week of interviews and appearances. Today, February 19, 2010, Jamie McMurray won the pole in California. With a lap at 183.744 mph (39.185 seconds), McMurray edged Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate Juan Pablo Montoya (183.477 mph) for the top starting spot in Sunday's Auto Club 500, the second points race of the Sprint Cup season.
