Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre Comes To Life Again In A Much Anticipated New 2011 Movie

Coming to SELECT theatres on March 11, 2011, is yet another version of Jane Eyre, this one featuring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. Written by Moira Buffini, this movie is based on the 1847 book by Charlotte Bronte. I am so excited to see this movie but very disappointed to know that it doesn't open locally until April 1st.

The new version of this romantic drama is expected to appeal to new readers of Jane Eyre and to stay fairly close to the storyline in the book.

Set in the 19th century, Jane Eyre leaves Thornfield Hall, the estate where she works as a governess, because both the home and the owners have pushed her as far as she can go. Since she has no home of her own, a clergyman offers her refuge in his. It is while living and recovering in that home that she looks back at the years she spent in Thornfield Hall.

Rated one of the most anticipated movies of 2011 by The Playlist who said, "As bookish nerds, we're psyched for this one, largely thanks to Fukunaga's style and great casting with Judi Dench, Jamie Bell and Imogen Poots rounding out the cast." I am excited about this movie, too. I love a good period movie and just about anything with Judi Dench.

On this page, you will find more information about this new version of Jane Eyre. Make sure to view the Official Jane Eyre movie trailer, which is shown below. The trailer reveals a deep and dark movie, which has surely captured my imagination...

Advance Review of Jane Eyre (2011)

Cary Fukunaga directs the latest in the endless list of Jane Eyre's movies. Apparently there are 21 film and television versions of this story.

The 2011 version of this movie is shaping up to be an extra special version. Fakunaga has chosen a stellar cast, which includes Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Sally Hawkins, Simon McBurney and Imogen Poots. Then he added two interesting actors for the lead roles -- Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland and The Kids Are All Right) as Jane and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) as Edward Rochester.

Mia is said to be a truly vivid version of Jane and Michael a truly tormented hero. Elle says that she has a breakthrough in this movie and that "it's her Jane, and Brontë's as well." In this version of the movie Elle also says, Jane is reserved not meek and speaks out when required. Jane is luminous. Jane is mischievous. Fukunaga ws determined to give this movie authenticity and Elle closes with "Fukunaga's Jane Eyre is a love story, as fiercely intelligent as it is passionate. He uncovers what the bodice rippers miss: that these lovers are equals and, as such, equally deeply felt aspects of their creator."

Jane Eyre (2011) Movie Soundtrack

Jane Eyre Movie Soundtrack
Dario Marianelli, who also composed the music for Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, composed the soundtrack for the 2011 version of Jane Eyre. (The score for Atonement won an Oscar in 2008 and the Pride and Prejudice score was nominated for one in 2006.) The score for Jane Eyre is supposedly a suitably romantic and moving score for this new version of Jane Eyre. It features a lot of a solo violin work as played by violinist Jack Liebeck.

Jane Austen Reading

Fans of 19th-century dramas might enjoy these pages.

"There is something about the current situation that the world finds itself in where the Brontës more suit the mood of the moment [than Austen]. Jane Austen is a lighter cut than the Brontës, who are much more brooding and bleak." Whether or not you agree with that quote from The London Times, fans of the historical movies like Jane Eyre might well like these Jane Austen productions:

Where/when will it be in Michigan theaters?

Unfortunately, it seems that Jane Eyre is not going to be given a typical movie release. It appeared at one of my local movie theatres (in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) for two weeks and is now at another one for, I assume a short run. That means that, for whatever reason, it is not appearing at most of our movie theatres...I'm disappointed with the limited release and I know many others are. I can only suggest you keep checking with your local theatres.
