It can seem as you look out that the world is just chaos and that we behave in terrible ways and we never really seem to get better. But we have to remember that compassion and love and altruism is equally deeply rooted in our primate heritage. They are just as evident in chimpanzees as the brutal, aggressive side of chimpanzee nature. We humans, therefore, have a choice ahead of us: we don't have to go the aggressive route. We can push and push and push towards love and compassion. That is where I believe human destiny ultimately is taking us.

Four Reasons for Hope

  1. The human brain
  2. The determination of young people
  3. The indomitable human spirit
  4. The resilience of nature

Roots & Shoots, and More...

Roots & Shoots engages and inspires youth through community service and service learning. I founded this global program to emphasize the principle that knowledge leads to compassion, which inspires action. All Roots & Shoots groups show care and concern in three areas: the human community, animals, and the environment.

About jgoodall

I began my landmark study of chimpanzees in Tanzania in June 1960, under the mentorship of anthropologist and paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. My work at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve had helped redefine the relationship between humans and animals.

In 1977, I established the Jane Goodall Institute, which continues the Gombe research and is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. The Institute also is widely recognized for establishing innovative, community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and the Roots & Shoots education program that has 6,000 groups in more than 87 countries.
