The Sweet Scent of Flowers and Beyond

I first fell in love with Janet Fitch when I read her first novel, White Oleander. At the time it was quickly becoming a bestseller and Oprah had picked it to be one of her book club selections.

It was later made into a feature film starring such power women as Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Wright Penn, Renee Zellweger and Alison Lohman. Not surprisingly, the movie didn't live up to Janet's poetic similes and dark characters.

Three Reasons to Love Janet Fitch

  • Her poetic writing style.

  • Her characters.

  • Her ability to weave light into the dark.

"Carla has parents who let her do anything she wants. Laurie's mother keeps her on a short leash, demanding that she keep the house clean, cook for her sick father, and stay out of trouble. Still, at Carla's instigation, they manage to keep things on the street exciting. Sometimes it's shoplifting, sometimes it's hitching a ride, sometimes it's smoking and flirting on the beach with older guys. If Laurie could only be as brave and daring as Carla, she knows her life would be a lot more interesting."

"Astrid Magnussen, the teenage narrator of Janet Fitch's engrossing first novel, White Oleander, has a mother who is as sharp as a new knife. An uncompromising poet, Ingrid despises weakness and self-pity, telling her daughter that they are descendants of Vikings, savages who fought fiercely to survive. And when one of Ingrid's boyfriends abandons her, she illustrates her point, killing the man with the poison of oleander flowers. This leads to a life sentence in prison, leaving Astrid to teach herself the art of survival in a string of Los Angeles foster homes. As Astrid bumps from trailer park to tract house to Hollywood bungalow, White Oleander uncoils her existential anxieties."

White Oleander was a very sad and disturbing novel. Is it weird that it is one of my favorites? Probably...
