How about you? Do you like Japan pop culture?

I have always been fascinated with Japan pop culture because I've been exposed to it since I was a child. My dad was a professor in Kyoto University in 1979 and then at the University of Tsukuba in the early 90s until a few years ago. My family and I would visit him in Japan regularly all those years and this is why I see Japan as my second home.

In the West, Japanese culture comes in the form of Power Rangers, Godzilla movies, and Sanrio products, but of course the indigenous pop culture is much richer. Rather than focus on what the rest of the world has already encountered, Mark Schilling provides an encyclopedic compendium of books, movies, music, comedians, and cultural scandals that have had the greatest impact in Japan.
