Haiku Japanese Art and Poetry 2012 Wall Calendar
Haiku Japanese Art and Poetry 2012 Wall Calendar
The traditional Japanese haiku contains seventeen sound characters, a seasonal reference, and a distinct pause or interruption. The seasonal allusion emphasizes the essence of haiku: nature and its ephemeral beauty. The deceptively simple haiku featured in this calendar-rendered in English with Japanese calligraphies and transliterations-are from Pomegranate's book Haiku: Japanese Art and Poetry, by Judith Patt, Michiko Warkentyne, and Barry Till. The poems are paired with ukiyo-e prints and shin hanga woodcuts, which, with their depth and delicacy, quietly capture a moment in time.

- Woodblock printing was invented in China around the year 200. However it was not adopted in Japan till the 17th century. However, when it did catch on, it became a major force in not only the printing of books, but also art production. The combination of color and clear lines make these pieces of art an enduring legacy.

- The art of Japanese woodblock prints is fabulous. I don't know how they get those nuanced colors to combine with the sharp lines and the fascinating shapes. Calendars featuring this art form, usually showing off 19th century woodblock prints, are a beautiful addition to any home.
- Utagawa Hiroshige Wall Calendars
- Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. - Katsushika Hokusai woodblock prints calendars
- The Great Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. An example of ukiyo-e art, it was published sometime between 1830 and 1833 (during the Edo Period) as the first in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and is his most famous work.
Nara 2011 Wall Calendar
Yoshitomo Nara, Japanese pop art
The sweet and snarky drawings of contemporary Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara could coax a smile from the most sullen goth girl. Featuring scowling children and drawn in a confident manga-influenced style, these works reward close examination with a surprising edge of subversive humor. Both dark and playful, the odd children that populate most of Nara's works have found appreciation in gallery exhibitions and printed media across the globe, and they have garnered a wide following that includes everyone from emo tweens to the well-heeled art crowd.
