Maple trees can make some of the most exquisite bonsai trees! This tree can be the crowning jewel in any bonsai master's collection! They are hardy, easy to train an care for and stunning to look at even when not in leaf. Yet still, these bonsai are most stunning in the fall when the leaves turn a bright crimson red. Maples respond splendidly to leaf trimming and this helps to form a beautiful branch structure.

Japanese Bonsai: Cherry Trees

Japanese cherry trees are widely known as symbols of the Japanese culture. When in bloom these trees give off a sweet fragrance.
Although native to Japan, these beautiful trees can be found in Washington D.C. In 1912, 3,020 cherry trees from twelve varieties were shipped from Yokohama, Japan on board the S.S. Awa Maru, bound for Seattle. Upon arrival, they were transferred to insulated freight cars for the shipment to Washington. D.C. Helen Herron Taft and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese Ambassador, planted two Yoshino cherry trees on the northern bank of the Tidal Basin, about 125 feet south of what is now Independence Avenue, SW.

The Karate Kid
Who didn't love The Karate Kid??? It was this movie that first introduced me (and so many others) to the art of Japanese Bonsai. There was something so wonderful about watching Daniel closing his eyes and and thinking about the word "tree". Recently I had the opportunity to relive those moments again when a friend bought me the DVD.
