JDM Engines and their history
JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market. JDM engines are highly sought after by import racers and tuners today here in the United states and global markets. The reason for the desire for these engines are the low mileage that comes on these engines.
In Japan it is not only very expensive to own a car, but the older your car gets the more taxes and fee's are imposed on the car. The reasoning behind this is the older the car gets, the more pollution the vehicle creates, and being a relativly small country with a very concentrated population pollution is a major concern.
The taxes imposed on older vehicles often makes it cost prohibitive to own the vehicle, so the vehicles end up getting recycled and the parts (engines, transmissions, and accessories) get exported to other countries such as the United States. Being that the cars are often only 3-5 years old, the mechnical parts such as the JDM engines and transmissions have relativly low miles on them! Which makes them very attractive for tuners to swap them into their vehicles.
Reasons to buy JDM Engines
Now it has become easier to source parts for your JDM car with supplier providing access to easy parts. The cost benefits of buying JDM engines and JDM transmissions far outweighs the benefits of buying new from the factory. Your local dealership would normally charge $2500-$5000 for a new part for your car, but buying JDM can be as little as $300, and many suppliers now offer warranties on their engines and transmissions. What is JDM?
JDM vehicles often differ in features and equipment from vehicles sold elsewhere. For example, Honda has produced many different versions of the B18C 1, B16A and K20A engines for various markets worldwide. This is done due to varying emission regulations in different countries.
Vehicles built to JDM specifications may have stiffer suspensions and improved throttle response over vehicles built for different markets, due to differing driving styles and different road types. For example, the USA features long highways where a smoother ride would be preferable, while Japan's roads are short and twisty, where a stiffer suspension is desired for improved handling capability. For the US and European market versions, some features may be removed in order to stay below a certain pricing goal for the car, such as using a conventional rear suspension instead of a double wishbone suspension and lack of electronic devices like Active Yaw Control. Furthermore, engine power of JDM sports cars is sometimes reduced because of stricter emission standards in other countries.
