Will This Be a Neverending Bonsai Story?

Thanks to my Mom, I'm now the proud owner of a Japanese Maple Bonsai Tree. (No, not the one to the left -- that's my "visualization goal" for what I want mine to look like.) It turns out these are one of the most popular and easy to grow Bonsai Trees. And, of course, their spectacular colors make them a beautiful addition anywhere in your home.

Bonsai Gardening Secrets is the book that showed me most of what I know about Japanese Maple Bonsais.

... or Why the Japanese Maple Bonsai is So Popular

The Japanese Maple Bonsai, or Acer Palmatum, as the scientists call it, has leaves that display an amazing array of colors throughout its growing season from spring to fall. These Bonsai Trees will lose their leaves as it becomes dormant in the winter months. There are many varieties of this species, and each one has its own unique range of colors. In some, even the trunks and branches will take on different shades of green and red.

... or the Bloodgood Japanese Maple Bonsai

There are hundreds of varieties of the Japanese Maple Bonsai, with different forms, leaf types, sizes, and of course, colors. One of the more popular ones is the Bloodgood, which has leaves that take on a reddish purple hue in the warm summer months and turn a bright crimson in the fall.

Seeing Red

... or the Crimson Queen Japanese Maple Bonsai

The Crimson Queen Japanese Maple Bonsai, or Acer Palmatum Dissectum, is more suitable as an Outdoor Bonsai Tree, as it grows to about 10' (3m) tall as a dwarf tree! Its leaves have a long and feathery appearance that gives it a nickname of "Weeping" Maple. The color of the leaves changes from a dark red in the summer to an even deeper red in the fall.

Amazing Technicolor Red Dwarf

... or the Aratama Japanese Maple Bonsai

This Japanese Maple Bonsai variety certainly lives up to its name, which means "uncut gem". Its leaves start out brick red to purple red, with new leaves that bloom in the spring only being bright red with no purple. As summer approaches, the middle of the leaves turn to green, leaving only a trace of red on the outside. Finally, in the fall, the tiny leaves change to orange, yellow, and red.
