The Art of the Japanese Bath

Welcome to the world of OFURO! The ofuro is a Japanese soaking tub, traditionally make out of wood, more specifically hinoki wood (Japanese cypress). Hinoki is known as the emperor of woods for its unique aromatherapy and rot resilient qualities. Forget modern jacuzzis with high powered jets, and hot tubs with swirling water, if you haven't soaked in a hinoki tub, you don't know what you're missing.

The Japanese bath culture does not stop at the ofuro, which is usually in the home, but public baths are still hugely popular in Japan. Indoor baths, outdoor baths, hot water, cold water, lavender water, its all part of the Japanese public bath experience. And we mustn't forget the famous Japanese onsen (hot springs) that are dotted all throughout the Japanese archipelago. These legendary hot springs attract flocks of people from both in and out of Japan every year.

So welcome to the world of all things Japanese bath, explore, comment and enjoy the ofuro!

Hinoki's Heartland

Kiso Valley, Hinoki Wood, and Purple Mountains

Here is another short VTR that Yoshiaki took in Kiso valley when visiting the ryokan of a friend.
The place is located in Nagano-ken, Kiso-gun.
The name of the ryokan is: NEZAME-SANSHI (purple mountains). This is because the mountains surrounding Kiso turn to purple at sunset.
