Japanese vs American futon
Whats the difference.
I think that in America, we have a slightly different view of what a futon is compared to the way Japanese know a futon to be. First off, let us prounounce this futon correctly. The u of fu is the double oo sound so that you havefoo then add the word tone with the long 'oh' sound
Pronounced foo tone, spelled futon not like crutons.
foo + tone = correctly pronounced foo-tone or futon
The difference may be a thickness issue. Real Japanese futons are not thick but are layered so that you can have up to 3 or more futons stacked on top of each other. In Japan, space is a scarce commodity and as such the Japanese must fold their beds everyday and put them away in a closet so that the same space may be used for other things during the day. It is a little tedious but it saves space.
In America I get the impression of a very thick mattress that is hard to fold. In Japan futons are not hard to fold but are very pliable and are usually folded into 3 sections for easy putting away. Thanks for getting this straight and tell your friends you learned something new about foo tones

Japanese Traditions: Futon Hoshi
The relatives are coming for Obon Yasumi, or the (very hot) Summer Holiday in Japan that everyone gets this time of the year for a few days. We need to air out the bedding (futon) for them to sleep on. It is tradition. Here is how it's done.
