The Japanese Vowels

Ranked #2,584 in Education, #60,758 overall | Donates to Humane Society of the United States

WARNING! All who proceed here have a high probability of learning Japanese

a e i and o - u are the vowels of the English language, as familiar to us as a i u e o is for Japan.

English - a e i o u

The tongue of a samurai!

Japanese - a i u e o

A E I O U - No this is not an Eye Exam!
This is just a different vowel order.

Learn Japanese and be at peace. Ahh

The First vowel is A just like in English

The a vowel is not pronounced like the a in apple or angry but the a as in awesome or awful. Remember to pronounce all Japanese vowels so that your choir teacher would be proud of you, because you always drop your jaw. The character at right is the a vowel as it is written in hiragana

The second vowel is pronounced the same but

in romaji is written i

so a Japanese language learner should think of the Japanese vowel order in a little different manner. In English the order is a e i o u but to beginning learners of Japanese you can think of it as a i u e o. The order is just a little out of place.

English - a e i o u
Japanese - a i u e o

i is pronounced like the choir ee, wide smiling ee as in cheeeeeeeeese.

The third vowel in Japanese is u

3rd Japanese Vowel

U is pronounced ooh. Like ooh thats a neat haircut.

Remember the order of vowels in Japanese is a little messed up so keep reviewing it until you got it down pat! Good luck

The 4rth vowel in Japanese is a pure vowel sounding e in romaji

e is one of the harder choir vowels

but if you can get the pure eh as in pet or the e as in bed then you have the pronunciation for the 4rth Japanese vowel

The final Japanese vowel corresponds to our O

Make sure to use your choir member Oh as in OH no
with rounded lips and lots of space in you mouth.

Konnichi wa, Makurasaki Sensei! Thank you for visiting my Niseko lens! Your comments are always appreciated! (Have you visited my Narita lens? Or my Hawaii or Guam lenses?) I use about the same "format" for all of them--and I've learned a lot about how to make these lenses from the fantastic Giant Squids roaming around our Squidoo environment! Just need to learn more from our great group! Mo itchi do, doomo arigato!
